I haven't noticed shaking on mine I have a GLX which is possibly a different mounting - on the light output, I would have thought the HID would be decent?

I installed some osram nightbreakers and its marginally better. But high-beam is still not up to the vehicle it replaced - a 15 year old Ford ute. To me it seems the light throw is too far into the distance and there's not enough light in the 50m in front of the car. The best setting is that point in pulling back the stalk where lowbeam and highbeam are both on LOL. Adding driving lights next week should sort high beam, but seems I am stuck with the poor low beam performance.

Yes, my headlights shake. Its not the actual light fitting itself but more so like the globe is shaking around inside the light fitting. Very weird but can't see anything loose externally...

The MQ we've had here for R&D has same issue and I agree with low beam OK but OEM hi beam hi beam has a fair bit to be desired. :( I was a bit surprised and also disappointed.

The HIDs in my GLS are shite. When turned on they're bright for half a second, then dull, and seem to settle down then. And they shake a little, but it's not too bad. Never had HIDs before, but was expecting better! Glad I put decent spotties on it!

The shaking is not the bulb moving in its mount but rather the frame that the projector is mounted on moving on the mounts which are connected to the adjustment screws. It can be fixed but requires complete dismantling of the headlights so won't be cheap. Expect around $200/light.

New Triton Exceed - Headlights Flickering

Postby milhous2 on Wed Jul 27, 2016 7:43 am

Hello again!

Anyone know what causes the headlights to flicker on regular bumps on regular city roads? Both appear to do it and it's rather distracting. The vehicle is currently back in "Service" however the initial report was this is "normal" however I don't believe this and have insisted this needs to be fixed.

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :)

If they're flicking off its probably a loose electrical connection. Checks - relay, fuses, headlight switch connector, etacs, etc.

If it stays on but the beam flicks to different direction it may have one of the reflector adjust screws off the thread leaving it dangling.

I don't think they vary in brightness. They just shake around a bit, and because they are quite directional it is very noticeable.

Mine do it as well. You get used to it. ;)

My dealer/service says there's nothing wrong thus why I'm seeking advice here.

Thanks.

It's more a shaking than flickering. It appears to flicker in your visual but when you look at it directly it looks like they change angle.

The Dealer/Service people went all over all the electrical side yesterday and says it's all good.

However now I have read in another section of the forums here about this shake and why and how....

"The shaking is not the bulb moving in its mount but rather the frame that the projector is mounted on moving on the mounts which are connected to the adjustment screws. It can be fixed but requires complete dismantling of the headlights."

So I'm going to suggest this to the Dealer/Service Agent today. Wish me luck!

They won't do it. They'll tell you that the headlights are sealed units and can't be disassembled. Of course that's rubbish, I've done lots of them, but it is true to the extent that they don't have the experience, knowledge or equipment to be able to do the job. PM me if you want more information on this.

Time will tell! Waiting for a answer / plan of action now :)

Anyone heard this same problem happening with other vehicles using HIDs?

AFAIK I have not seen this on any other vehicle.

Thanks C

Yes, there have been a few. Mostly due to insufficient mounting hardware but also due (Audi) to the manufacturer setting the projector on rubber mounts - so not solid. Can also happen when the adjustment motor linkages are a bit under specced.

My MQ GLS model lights has been shaking since new and quite frankly I think it is a safety hazard at night as very distracting. Went into dealership with all the info from the forum and they looked at my blankly and basically did not know what to do about it ( I think they new about problem). Even showed them posting about rubber mounts.

I think more pressure has to be put on MMAL.

My car is booked in to hopefully get this fixed. They are keeping it over night to test drive to confirm. I will keep you all updated. I agree with John this is a bit of a safety issue.

Well my MQ is finally in for its 1500km Service and to rectify the shaking headlights. I'll know more tomorrow as they are apparently doing a night test tonight to confirm.
