Brakes Upgrade?!?

Brakes Upgrade?!?

Postby Nooblishly on Fri Apr 14, 2017 1:36 pm

Afternoon boys and girls,

Looking for some help in the brakes department, in regards to upgrading them.

Anyone done this on a 2016 triton exceed, I am over the burning smell even when jake braking. Maybe I have been riding a bike for too long and I am doing it wrong, should I be running in 4HLc or just stay in 2H and keep revs around 3-3.5k revs whilst on steep downhill roads.

But I digress, yeah so any help in upgrading the brakes would be awesome.

Cheers,

Dory

I got a set of braided brake lines from ultimate susspension. Also changed rotors to cross drilled and slotted. And upgraded brake pads and brake fluid.

Never had any issues. Going down some pretty step long hills no issues.

When I replace pads will change rotors to some of the dba t3.

I have braided brake lines. It improves feel but I don't think it will help with the stinky brakes. Being in 4wd or 2wd shouldn't make much difference to running away. I don't own an auto but could you use sport mode or something to "jake brake" as you say?

Is it just a smell of brakes or are the brakes fading? You could go larger rotors but you'd need to space the callipers.

Well, there's no compression (Jacobs) brake on the Triton, and these diesels run "low compression" engines, so you won't get the same level of engine braking as you may be used to from older diesels.

Try picking a lower gear and see how that goes. For example, I use 3rd gear down most of Mount Ousley, and it holds at 80kph just fine. Occasionally I have to grab 4th to maintain speed on the slightly less steep sections, and then It's back to third. It doesn't over-rev,a and it's rare that I have to touch the brake or the accelerator.

I have the revs sitting around 3.5k revs and redline at 4, so not much more I can do in the engine braking department, hence using more brakes.

Might just invest to get rid of the shitty brakes.

And yes I get brake fade.

If you could put a Pajero hub on the fronts you could run larger calipers/rotors. Would need the splines of the front driveshafts to also match.

I'd be keen to give it a look if I had spare time

Try some good pads, don't ride the brakes, use the gears

Are talking about off road or on road steep hills?

I second this comment. 3rd in steeper conditions, 4th otherwise

drilled rotors crack, the holes are a weak spot. Slotted or dimpled ate the go

I asked a question on a WA Challenger page about brake upgrades.
Answer
Rotors are for the paj/triton and the challenger they have the same hubs. And currently using the challenger caliper with the paj caliper bracket. Really all you need is the caliper bracket of a 314mm rotor to upgrade.

I asked a rally car driver about brakes. The answer was solid rotors work better.

An Engineer who tests pad compounds at Bendix in Ballarat wrote in a forum.
He did testing for a car company. Provided braking is within a small percentage of standard re certification is not needed. He found that the slotted (or cross drilled) actually performed slightly worse than standard rotors.

In a 4wd holes and slots hold dirt causing more pad wear.

In high end race cars holes/slots allow super heated gas to escape from between pad and rotor. Not so much a problem in 4WD

but as always YMMV

Is this only the current model paj sport?

I'd love a set of NS--NW series Pajero fronts on my triton

Will they fit? Only the later ones have the 4 pot calipers and they are what makes such a big dofference.
Chris

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

I'm not sure, have done plenty of googling and can't find anything with hub drawings to compare. Wheel offset would be easy to get around so is entirely possible

Hi team. It’s been a hot minute.

I have an auto 2010 5speed MN. It has braided lines, dba t2 rotors and bendix heavy duty pads, 66% reduction gears, wholesale automatic tc lockup.

I don’t drive a whole lot of km and yet I burn through pads every 25,000km and rotors around the 60,000km. Is anybody else chewing through pads this quickly?

I’m also finding that the brakes aren’t holding the car on low range tracks. As soon as I engage reverse the brakes are rolling. I realise with the reduction gears there’s a bunch more torque but I’d still expect to be able to hold the car.

What else can I do to help with these two problems that I assume are connected? Is there a better brake master cylinder or brake booster?

My old ml brakes hold on super steep roads with fairly standard front brake replacements. My rear brakes are still original from the factory at nearly 300k.

I don't think booster etc, is your issue. Automatics will generally be harder on brakes as as you can't decouple coming into intersections.

I'd check rear brakes adjustment (auto adjusters don't usually work properly). Is the system bled properly? Is the Auto lockup system actually unlocking when it's supposed to?

Interesting! I’ll have to have another play once I get the brake specialist bloke in Phillip to adjust it.

Thanks for the reply!

I have literally pulled on the steering wheel to put more pressure on the brakes in the past. It’s such a sketchy feeling!
