I could try and measure it for you but I am pretty crook, so tomorrow I will. If ya have a quick look in my "Shed" there is a pic of the ARB rearstep towbar.

Hi DB,
Mate I nearly put a standard towbar on to. Then I got thinking :o went through the research first glad I did as I think it is a lot better, gives you all round protection especially for reversing and shopping centres for the mrs. Will get you some measurements as soon as it stops raining and can go to the shed.
See you,

I was tired of the factory tow bar being low and hitting on everything off road. I did my own cut and re weld and have managed to lift it 5-6". I will post up photos and build once I complete it with a rear protection bar. Only took about 4 hours.

I did the same thing with the hilux towbar, modified the mounts and raised it a full 2"...much cheaoer than an extra 2" suspension lift and heaps departure angle heaps.

I've just bought a GLX towbar which is much higher. When I eventually get it, I will modify the rear step to fit and sell the ground dragger.
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

It ain't pretty being easy!!

I got the Hayman Reece one on mine which is much higher than the standard. It sits just under the factory GLX-R alloy step plate

This used to be an OEM GLX-R towbar...

I don't know how much I raised it but the top of the horizontal square tube is 15mm below the tabs that bolt to the bottom of the chassis...

I simply took the original off, cut the mounting side plates from the tube, re-welded it as high up as I could without fouling on the body or chassis and then cut off any excess from the side plates.

It tucks up nicely and I've yet to hit it off road.

Factory Towbar increase high

Postby Crooko on Mon Mar 16, 2015 2:00 pm

Hi
Sorry if this is repeated elsewhere , I did a few searches and could find anything

So here's my issue , I have just bought a new boat .towing weight 1600kg. My driveway has a slope and trailer bottoms out.
Didn't have this issue with the old tinnie.
MN 2013 GLX-r with factory towbar.
Is there any easy (not too expensive ) option to increase high. I don't want to lift the rear end
Something like a towball mount that bends up not down ???
Only need a few inches

Cheers

a lot of them you can just remove the ball and turn it upside down would give you 2 inches

Not much you can do if your tongue just comes straight out from the towbar. But you could buy a new tongue that is angled, and flip it so the angle points up rather than down. I did this with my trailer to level it. Something like this one...

Just undo the ball, flip the tongue over and reattach the ball. Will give about 3" extra clearance on the draw bar
