Towbar MN......what other options

Postby Klink on Thu Sep 29, 2011 8:18 am

Hi guys. Im gonna use your expertise once again. ;)
I want to put a towbar on my MN 2011. From what ive been reading on this forums is that the Hayman Reese towbars hang too low. I dont really like the look of the TJM and ARB rear step. If someone has a clear picture of either one on a charcoal colour Triton, it may give me a better idea on what it may look like before I judge any further.
I did like the Ironman rear step but they dont make them for MNs.
I was contemplating on the factory Mitsi polished aluminium rear protection bars so I can fit a normal towbar on but Im not 100% sure on these yet as I havent heard any feedback on these.
What other options do I have? Have I missed anything? Ive had a good search on these forums by the way ;)
cheers guys

It depends if you are doing off road work or not Colonel.

If you are you are quite limited (I don't know if the modified GLX bar works for MN) to probably ARB or TJM.

The std Mits bar (and protection bars) are very low.

Have a look at the MCC range. Something may appeal.

The tow bar bolts to the chasis and has no bearing on the step. it is the bar itself that hits.

I forgot the MCC range   worth a look as Motoz says

The MCC bars sit really well on the Triton. The Triton Rear Bar is actually MCC's highest selling component in Thailand and now Australia. Here is a photo of it fitted to Fraz91's ML Tub

The only drama is they are currently out of stock until mid next month and there's only 2 left out of that shipment. The reset have already been pre-sold

The price for forum members is $845.50 + Freight or Fitting. There has been a price rise since they were released but they are still good value.

I think Helicopter Cow's vehicle is the closest you will find. I haven't seen him post photos yet but it does look very very good. ;)

Towbar MN......what other options

Postby RossyB07 on Thu Sep 29, 2011 11:55 am

You can always go with a Hayman Reece tow bar without the rear step therefore the tow bar will sit much higher giving a better departure angle. Obviously you must remove the genuine rear step and bumpers for this style. Have a look at my pics :)

I had a GLX where the tow bar sits higher than the others with rear bumpers and i then bought the mitsu rear protection bars and had them powedcoated black.

if it was me with a GLXR etc i would remove the rear bumper and step and fit a towbar for the GLX and mitsu rear protectionbar - color matched by your friendly powdercoater as you improve your departure angle.

Cheers

I like your idea.Where would I get my hands on a towbar that suits the glx? Will that fit on the MY11 GLX-R?

Towbar MN......what other options

Mitsubishi. I had a part number and price for it at one stage. Suttons Arncliffe told me that for them it was pretty much a stocked item if I wanted to buy one. Can't remember how much it was though.

What I do remember is that the alloy protection bars cost more than the towbar

By the looks of them, the Mitsubishi alloy protection bars are more for protection around town from bumps and dings, not serious protection when offroad. If you want off-road protection, then I'd honestly be looking at MCC, ARB or TJM. They cost a bit more, but it's better than having to get a panel beater to fix the tub and then getting protection for the rear.

See the build up of my old Triton here.

You're not telling us what you want it all for colonel...hard to help if we don't know your intentions.

The Mits "protection" bars are for show only or around town use.

For off road you need the other bars - or none at all and use the GLX towbar....wasn't sure the GLX towbar worked on the MN's as per my first post.

At work we have two tritons with the "protection" bars on them and they have both been bent all over the place just from easy work.
I have also been looking into rear bars for my own car and Kaymar have just brought out one for the MN. I contacted them and have been sent out some pictures. I love the look, the height of the bar/clearance and the tub protection, but the price is rediculous. approx. $1700 for the bar alone. Here are the two photos I was sent.

[censored] thats ugly... I love the long drop tow hitch and the possibility of a bent chassis from 2 x wheel carriers is an added bonus.

Towbar MN......what other options

Postby JamoGLXR on Thu Sep 29, 2011 3:48 pm

Personally my hayman Reese tow bar with step is a little low but I'm seriously considering modding mine.
I reckon I could lift it about 2" from memory. This requires cutting of towbar, Mitsubishi rear step and drilling of new holes in HR towbar. You could probably do it with battery drill, hacksaw or jigsaw, files and socket set... With newtriton stubby cooler with "powerades"

Belay that. Had a good look, wont work have to cut and reweld some tabs.

As you were before I spoke without thinking but the above mentioned may work if you get a "without step" towbar and sit your slotted step back over it.. No promises it will work tho.

Well, it's more for metro driving than anything else as I don't know anyone in my area that does 4x4 that I can tag along with but regardless of that, I would like to do the job properly the 1st time so I don't get caught out I suppose
