What radiator have you got?

Postby Greedy on Wed Sep 23, 2009 2:55 pm

I just had my radiator replaced after having a no-brain moment with the pressure cleaner. Interesting to note my diesel engined triton had a bloody petrol radiator installed from factory. I'm sure this didn't help with the heating up issues I was having when towing up ill or through thick sand. :x The core on the petrol one is 16mm whilst the diesel is 26mm.
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

It ain't pretty being easy!!

Greedy......please explain! (having a Pauline moment there)

I understand you wrecked the core with the 100BAR cleaner  ....but what is this about the wrong radiator? Can you confirm these sizes and is there an easy way to tell without removing them?
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

I just checked mine and it's difficult to actually measure the core thickness without removing things but the header tanks are 50 mm and the core is MUCH less than that. Good thing for we petrol engined folk is that there's an off the shelf heavy duty alternative.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

After I posted this, I took the old radiator to the dealer and we compared it with other diesels on the lot. There was only one and that had the 16mm core. The radiator I have put in is an aftermarket jobbie and the manufacturer may have taken it upon him/herself to step the diesel one up to a 26mm core. Maybe this is the heavy duty one 5th is talking about. The standard one is bloody skinny and the dealer was all too quick to blame the bullbar for blocking airflow. He did seem surprised though that cooling would be overly affected by the bending of approx 20% of the fins.

If I get really bored, I might have a go at it. Can't imagine it happening anytime soon though.

Depending how bad they are - assuming pretty bad - you can buy a fin comb from refrigeration wholesale suppliers. They come in a variety of widths so you can match the fin gaps to the appropriate comb. Cheap as well.

Don't know if I mentioned that when I saw you mate, but I meant to :)

You did mention the combs to me. I took it to a radiator specialist first but he thought it was too badly damaged. I still have the old radiator so will probably give it a go if I get fired up.
