MN GLX Mitsi Towbar install ...

Postby destorman on Wed Jul 07, 2010 4:56 am

Hello all ... not sure this is in the correct topic area ... here's a few pic's a some comments from my recent self install of the MN GLX Mitsi Towbar ...

Cost $585 from my local stealer (including wiring harness) ... installed my self in approx 3 hours.

I used some bricks to support the weight of the bar ... lifted bar on one end, put in a couple of bricks, then same to the end, and onwards until the height was about right like so:

once at the correct height, the first 'drop down' bolts were put into the chassis:

and the bar just slides up to them (worked out one brick on it's side at the top was the perfect height for me):

So, from there it was whack in the other bolts and plate and tighten it up. Simple!

Next was the wiring harness ... brilliant clip together system. Bit of work at the back with installing the supplied relays and clipping together the harness into the existing wiring, so it ends up looking like this:

Then, up to the passenger side, and into the engine to do the same ... simple instructions (yes, I know, I broke the block code by reading them) and all just clipped together as it should ... hooked up the trailer and tested the lights ... all worked. Time for a stubby or two ...

Here's a couple of finished pic's:

Yeah m8, I read Scott Cam's book a few years ago and picked up a good bit of advice about picking up brick's if you see any lying around (Scott's view being you can build a house out of 'em if you get enough) ... I now have a nice little 'collection' now and find I do not know how I could have lived without them.

Just gotta watch the mates who seem to 'borrow' but never return them.

Silly question time

Are the relays needed for the trailer loom or can you just link wires into brakes/blinkers like the old day cars?

use the relays.

There have been quite a few posts by people with problems with their lights. Apparently the ECU/canbus etc expect very specific voltages/resistance and what have you and spit the dummy when they don't get what they want.

Thanx cowboy. Can I use any relay (spot light) or is it a specific type I need?

I haven't the slightest idea. Didn't the new bar come with a loom for the lights? That's what I assumed you were talking about. There's a few sparkies lurking on here so you might be lucky.

I know when I get mine I'll be leaving the genuine wiring in there and passing on the wiring problems to whoever buys my towbar on ebay.

I think Hayman Reese might sell a plug and play loom that does the trick. Not sure if MMAL sell the loom separately but they certainly bundle it with the bar when they sell that to you.

The TJM bar comes with no wiring at all.

Hayman will not sell wiring separate, only a package

and MMAL is the sweet price of $308  .

Thanxs again cowboy, the search will continue

WTF? :o

Maybe a towbar instal place might sell it to you separately? I have a very vague recollection of reading something like that once. Could be dreaming I suppose.

:o  No what am I saying, typical.

The crazy thing about that is that the GLX bar is $580 and that includes the wiring loom. So that makes the bar $272? Not bloody likely.

Maybe the Brisbane boys can get you trade pricing from their local dealer that was recently posted about and then expunged?

Probably not the place to say it, but the ARB bar comes with a loom supplied :-)

For an extra grand or whatever it is it would want to be a very pretty loom too....

You can buy the ARB bar without the wiring loom. I have, twice now. They will try to sell it to you as a package and I haven't tried to buy the loom separately because in each case the customers wanted a different setup. Maybe different because I buy as a trade customer (that doesn't mean any extra discount, as is usual) but it might explain why they will separate. Note, both were ML's and not really recently.

What would they do if a panel beater had to replace a damaged bar only, or the loom was damaged but the bar wasn't?
Chris

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Sorry joe.

In all honesty most things ARB sell I can't justify there prices  .

Perhaps my ass is a wee bit tight but I search long and hard be4 any purchase and will only cough up when I'm happy I've exhausted all avenue's.

Guess on my next offroad adventure we'll be able to see if the TJM rates up there with the proven ARB.

Might change my name to goldfish

i have herd from various place's that not using the genuine harness will
1. void ur warrently if push comes to shove
2. They use relays for a reason and fused supply power from the battery to power the relays for a reason

I have also seen/herd that non genuine tow bars have been known to stretch chassis's from not having adequate mounting to rails. So it may cost a grand or less (i don't know) to have it fitted before u pick the truck up but you will have the full warranty there and more resale value down the track.

In saying this the arb/tjm rear step tow bar is fkn awesome bit of gear...

Postby tukadafoonday on Fri Feb 24, 2012 5:32 pm

Sorry to bring this thread up again.

Just installed my TJM bar and am now looking at info for the wiring. It seems that going factory may be best through this thread... What has everyone else done?

For now I shall use it for just protection!

Thanks

:-o 400 - 500? I hope the plug and play loom is expensive... Took me 30mins to install with just a socket set.

Gotta say 50kgs is hard to lift with ya knees while locating the bolt holes.

Just gotta get the loom sorted now. Hmmm

The Hayman Reese control box is the one that ARB were supplying but is available from various other places. Not quite plug'n'play but simple to wire up and works a treat. Solid state relays and smart electronics that sense the load on the circuit. Very happy with mine, which is mounted in the canopy, so well away from water and mud.

Arb just spliced into my harness the oldskool way with a narva kit.

To this day i havent had a problem and ive towed 3 different trailers.

Was a bit pissed off they didnt use a relay kit, but i cant argue when it works fine...

Yeh wells that's what I was thinking of doing until I started reading this thread.

What happens should the trailer wiring be bad? Blown fuse or something worse?
