Scotts Rods 3 inch exhaust - Review

Postby ollie65 on Sat Feb 11, 2012 6:30 pm

As promised I said I would give a review on the Scotts Rods 3 " sports exhaust.
I spoke to Scott and asked him about the 100 cell Catalytic converter. The 200 is designed for Diesels but the 100 would provide less restriction and better flow although it is primarily intended for petrol engines. I just want it to look legal  So I ordered the system and asked for a 1/8 npt socket for the EGT probe.
The complete system arrived about 2 days after placing the order, cant beat that. All of the required nuts bolts and gaskets were there including a sticker and a Cap 8-) .
Thw quality of the pipe work and fabrication was very good with all of the flanges nicely cut out by CNC Plasma, the welds were good as well and they had no dagsand minimal splatter. A few of the bends had slight scoring where the bending machine had clamped onto the pipe but nothing to really be concerned with. I then proceeded to remove the old exhaust which I reckon is about 20kgs heavier than the Scotts Rods one. I bolted up the dump pipe first as this would be the only one to give me any grief if any. The nut closest to the manifold is a real bitch to get at,thank god for a flexible knuckle bit in the trusty sidchrome socket set. I got all the studs / nuts on the the back of the turbo but left them loose. You have to use the existing hanger rubbers etc which slipped off easily with some WD40 and a large flatblade screw driver. I then fitted the rest of the exhaust up which was really easy and straight forward considering. once everything was connected I tightened the lot up to FT ;) Lastly I fitted up the EGT probe which sits about 2 inchws behind the turbo outlet.
I started up the MN and noticed straight away that I could hear a better Rumble from the exhaust, the turbo whine was also more evident. At idle the noise level was on par with standard. so far so good. 8-)
I drove it to work where we have some decent hills, and this exhaust with the chipit chip and unifilter now hauls arse  the torque is unreal and it easily climbed one of the hills in top that I had always had to go back to 4th previously. The growl is nice not to noisy and easily out pulls my mates D40.
I have to say at the moment I am impressed especially considering the relatively low purchase cost. Time will tell how the fuel economy will go , not good at the moment because im flogging it everywhere

Hey Ollie

Guys I run a Scott's rod system straight through (no cat). I have to say I am very impressed with the quality. 2 mates have since purchased a system from them after seeing and hearing mine.
Keen to get amongst it!!

I plan on getting one of these and then getting the chip at a later stage.
Should I still get the EGT probe thread fitted when i order i get it done when the chip is fitted?

I didn't order one as I was not sure of the size of the probe. The pyro was still making its way from the USA ( half the price). I had mine tapped by the mechanic down the road. $20. :D

The Rods are a good fit if running an oversize spare tyre too. 32" fits OK, 33 would squeeze with some persuasion.
I fitted one to an ML here a while back and went together sweet. 8-)

Get it done now, a bolt inserted with copper anti seize ( heat resistant) will keep it sealed up until you fit the probe...

As blue says, get it done as they can weld a bung in at bugger all cost. Just grab a 1/8 bsp or NPT brass plug and stick it in with CU800 or neverseize.

Scotts Rods 3 inch exhaust - Review

Postby smouch1975 on Sat Feb 11, 2012 11:38 pm

Am I wrong to think the stock exhaust has an EGT probe, so one must be added for the ECU?

Some euro vehicles come with a factory EGT probe, but our tritons definitely don't have one (unless theres an update in the my12).

See the build up of my old Triton here.

Some get narrow band O2 sensors mixed up with EGT thermocouples.
Besides, if manufacturers fit them, it should go pre turbo so be no problem fitting your own.

AFAIK the MY12 doesn't have it, I have just fitted an EGT to the factory dump last week. :)

Another MN coming in next week for a Rods exhaust up grade with EGT. 8-)

no probe standard. the probe and gauge is added and the driver can monitor it from the cab. no interface with the ECU.

search on here or google

here are two examples

I'd be in, in 8-12 weeks, depending on how quick this progresses. These ones are not stainless at this price, but still pretty good

I have the standard 3' Scotts system for about 2 years now, zero problems with it, no drone at any speed. I got mine from a group buy on here just FYI. If I was to do it again I would get it without cat and muffler, just a straight through from turbo!
