air compressors

Postby boo-ya on Tue Apr 22, 2008 8:35 am

Ok seeing as im goingh to be frequenting fraser island and rainbow beach on a regular basis, i woulod like to purchase a air compressor, but am a bit confused as what to get. I know i dont want to be waiting around for ages waiting for the pump to do its job, but also dont want to have to fork out a fortune for an under bonnet unit either.
I am looking for a portable one that can be thrown in the back and used when necessary without too much trouble. What do people on here use or can you recommend something?
There are some on ebay as well like the terrain tamer, shoiuld i stay away from this stuff or go with a reputable brand?

Cheers :-)

if u read the 4wd mags (can't remember whether it was australian 4x4 or 4wd monthly) they did a round up of all the air compressors. basically u get what you pay for. they tested ebay cheapies, supercheap cheapies thru to the rather expensive ones .

the cheapies either fried themselves and didnt finish the test or took absolutely ages compared to the name brands..

i ended up getting the bushranger max air2 as a result of the tests.5yr warranty too.
i got a copy of the times the air compressors took from 0-35psi and 15-32psi somewhere... let me find it..

I don't believe a thing I read in those mags they're so biased its ridiculous.

I bought a cheapy off ebay$70 delivered for a 150L/min and it'll probably do me as I wont be using it as often as you are.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260220746565&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016

I could run a test just wont be until sunday so results posted monday?

Also from what I understand the new ARB unit is a massive improvement so it might be worth the $$ for you if you're going to use it frequently.

My ARB unit is approx. 4 years old and so far trouble free. Does all four tyres in about 10 mins from 20 to road pressure (approx 35 psi) depending on load.
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

It ain't pretty being easy!!

Thanks for the info guys. I did have a look on ebay but i do still have some concerns from buying there, mates have had some not so good experiances, plus not the best after sales service.

Looks like i will be going to brissie on friday to have a look at this 4x4 show, so will have a look around and get some info.

I dare say i might have to bight the bullet spend a bit extra

Fireball Did your max air 2 come in a storage container? Just been looking at the bushranger website and it doesnt mention anything about it.

Also looked at the arb unit nwhich seems good but no arb dealer around here, but the bushranger gear is avaolable from a few places, TJM and autobahn, Just makes it easier if there is aproblem

This is what I'm getting soon.

http://www.sidewinder.com.au/page154aa.html

They had an article on most of the compressors in one of the 4x4 mags recently and this came up very well. I think it's very well priced for the speed.

I have an arb compressor installed under the drivers seat with a switch near the power mirror adjusters. Pictures on shed.

I rate the ARB - very Fast to pump up . These compressors have no regular maintenance requirements, and dont require oil changes. they can be mounted upright or on their sides, and they come with all wiring looms to later fit diff lockers etc.

Very happy with it, and the fact its mounted (not portable) means no extra storage space taken up or hooking up to batteries etc required. They are also one of the more expensive bits of kit out there too. The portable one cost about the same as the permanent fit including instalation.

they all sound pretty good but not sure if fixed or portable is the go
with a portable other people can use it without draining my battery but then have to remember to take it , storage not a problem
fixed also good its alwys there and no fuss
hmm ???? thinking is needed better grab a beer
