OK trouble and Did Power, I didn't think about that :? haha

Hopefully it doesn't rain when I need to use it! The ARB rep didn't even suggest that as a problem!

If your compressor is under water I'd be worried about more than the compressor...

Just a quick point to add - four newtriton members (or me and two others) talking fast over each other regarding who's truck is best can probably achieve 92L/min just through exhaling hot air.

Volume at pressure (i.e. LPM at 30psi or time to get a 33" from 15-30PSI) and duty cycle would probably be the most important.

I had a Sonax 150LPM at 30PSI (from Dick Smith) cost $199 and was HUGE, but in hot weather, the thermal would kick in after two tyres. Sometimes it wouldn't come back for 20-30 mins (and I was always too lazy to put 5-10psi in every tyre, tried to do 15PSI in the LHS two first, with staggeringly consistent results) - always a slow limp home!

If travelling in groups, it prob doesn't matter, but a $30 foot pump takes up very little room if you plan on spending any time trekking solo :)

Cheers

Viair compressors, I wouldn't use anything else.

I've got a 550c model. Yet to be installed in the triton (it was in my Mazda previously), but it will blow away the arb and other 4x4 branded compressors.

Air-zenith are also really good and fully rebuildable, but very expensive.

Sure can.

I had my viair supplying two 10 gal tanks. 1min 30 to fill both tanks to 180PSI. Enough air to run whatever you like. I even ran a small supercheap rattle gun from the tank to remove wheels.

They also have 100% duty cycle. So you can run them flat out without over heating them.

Heres a pic of my viair, its quite large. Easy to setup for remote filter as well to keep away from water ingress. I'll be removing this from its current home and mounting into the triton.

Absolutely agree - some of the Bushranger models are rebadged Viair. 5 year no questions asked warranty; all parts are replaceable; can't go too far wrong!

Someone said that tanks needed to be kept at 100psi to run ARB air lockers...If I was buying lockers and wanted higher pressure than 100psi in my tank, I'd investigate a pressure limiting valve for the line to the lockers. I dont know that you can get these for air lines - but you can get them for water lines, so it would be worth a look. Then you can take your pick of compressors :D

So as there is just no room under the bonnet of my MN, other than the tub, where else have others installed their compressors?

I carry crap around in my tub, and I am not sure I would like the compressor in their getting knocked about, but I would like a compressor onboard when out in the scrub.

Hmm.. Maybe I can setup something that has it removable so it only need be installed when required, and removed when not.

So.. show us where you mounted yours?

Researching mountings and tank sizes right now...I'm going to build a ratstriton inspired drawer system, but will mount the compressor and tank in the side areas if they fit rather than at the front as he has - purely as I want the drawers to extend by a metre. To extend by a metre I either need to spend $300 A PAIR on fully extendable sliders, or make my own black widow style for about $20 a pair - but then the drawers need to go all the way to the rear of the tray. I'm going the cheap option.

I didnt end up re-mounting that compressor into my triton unfortunately. I would have loved to use it, but space is tighter than I thought it was going to be. So it still resides in my other ute as per the pic.

I ended up going the smallest and highest cfm I could find.... ARB  Not happy about it, but we'll see how it performs.

If it packs it in I'll mount a viair to the chassis rail under the tub and re-route the air filter for it.

I was thinking under the tub might be an option, but having it exposed to everything foul that goes under the truck is a worry.

So what should i be looking at i dont plan on getting air lockers. Just pumping up my tyres and of course all my stingy mates who dont have one. I just want something that will pump up my tyres + others and not take an hour

Having a memory like a sieve I can't tell you the make and model of some of the better, quicker twins I've heard people talking about but I do know your budget doesn't cater for them unfortunately. :(

Some who may have suggestions possibly aren't posting due to that.

There was a compressor comparison in 4wd Action in the last 3 or 4 months - although some mag tests are not really accurate as advertising $$$ sway the reports.

The ARB is a good unit - as far as models go I am just talking their single stage "hi volume" model. Close-ish to your price.
You are stuck with ARB fittings though which also means it's not quite as simple as it should be to change the hose or accessories like it would be if they were std nitto like most.
I hate to advocate drugs, sex, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.

I would honestly look at Bushranger's products. Their compressor range is second to none and has a good mix of portable and on board systems. We have always used these and have never had any problems.

I'll throw in another option, I just went through this with my Dad and he ended up buying the Ironman Flo Pro Max. I can't recall the exact price but it was sub $300. I'm very impressed with this compressor, it inflated 8 of our tyres from 16 psi back to 34psi each in just under 20 minutes. It comes with a 3 year warranty so may be worth a look.

Wow, exactly what I was doing last night...looking for a compressor! I used the search, but like yourself I didnt find what I was looking for.

What I did discover was at the price range you have set, the best seems to be Bushranger products as they use VIAIR components.

I scoured the web for the best deal and managed to purchase the Bushranger Black Max for $229. It comes with all I need and fits into a custom made bag, although it can be mounted if required.

Just waiting for it to be delivered now... :D
