Yes it is illegal. The maximum size you can go legally is +15mm from the tyre size on the vehicle placard. For the ML, that is 245/70/R16 (750mm overall Diameter). So maximum size you can legally go is 765mm.

In all other states but QLD you can get an engineering certificate of safety to make it legal. Unfortunately QLD does not allow this for tyres =(

The documentation for this is located

You may also find that the tyre manufacturer will not warranty the tyres because they're usually designed for 8" wide rims.

I generally think that tyre warranties aren't worth much anyway though.

MTZ are great tyres i'm running 265/75/16 or 32's where going 285/75/16 but didn't have them in stock.
285/75/16 MTZ can fit 7" rims as stated in there web page. BF goodrich 285/75/16 can only fit 7.5" up.
Cheers

legal in the NT. I took my truck across the pits with 2 in lift and standard tyres to check if it would be legal to go 285's. Went and fitted them and took it back and all was fine. As long as you dont go over 100mm above standard height you are fine.
My tyres are 100mm higher overall (lifts the car 50mm) and 80 mm wider than stock. I am running a 45mm dobinson lift, but it only measured about 65mm above the stock height. (The suspension has sagged a bit Im guessing)For some reason the GLX stock measured 15mm higher than the GLX-R.

Did anyone have to make any modifications to their trucks when they got BF Goodrich All terrians 285/75R16?
Just heard that a person had to take all the mud guards out, anyone heard of it?
And do they fit well? or should I drop a size to 275/70R16?

Going from 285/75R16 to 275/70R16 is actually dropping 2 sizes. Better off dropping to 265/75r16- which def fit. 285 will fit with lift

-15.
Interested to see where these make the 285 sit in relation to the guards if they are stock
Did you mean +15?
