Been a big weekend for Matilda...
Yesterday I took the back wheels off and checked/cleaned the rear drums. They weren't as bad as I was expecting and I reckon there is about 30k kms left on the linings (done 50k kms). Bit of mud to clean out, but overall in pretty good condition. She has seen a lot of mud, so all of my cleaning must be helping
On the way up through the hills yesterday I had the rail limiter bug out on me (2nd gear flat out, passing a rodeo before the road narrowed to one lane). So today I fitted the Chip-it upgraded rail limiter.
Took Brett05 and Tony's advice below and all seems to have gone well, although I couldn't get a socket near the thing which is ironic considering I'd just bought a nice new Sidchrome 1/2" drive set for this very job ($148 on special at Bunnings
). So a 19mm ring spanner did the trick, with another ring spanner for extra leverage. Fiddly job with the return pipe in the way and limited access to limiter itself, but got there in the end.
You are right Brett, it makes a big difference. I thought Matilda went well before, but she really gets up and boogies now, and keeps hauling through to the redline. That flat 'out of boost' feeling is gone. Interesting to think that probably all diesel Tritons out there are suffering with dodgy rail limiters...
Also cleaned up the battery and tray area as well as some of the wiring.
Next weekend I'm going to rewire the positive lead on the winch and fit an in-line isolator switch, as well as change engine oil and filter, and replace the fuel filter. Should be ready for the Easter trip then
