Smeg

I'm wondering how long it all takes to boot up when you start the car. If it's anything like my home PC I would be half way to work before I could turn on the reversing camera to reverse out the driveway.

I have mine configed to only do a hibernate, not a full shut down
so on start up it comes up from hibernate, that is much faster than a cold boot, but yes, will still take like 10 sec

if it's just about the rev. CAM you could use a video CAM directly connected to the LCD, not a USB CAM connected via PC

get centrafuse form www.fluxmedia.net
about $275 US for the works with aussie maps. There's a new version coming shortly, but if you purchase before it comes out you will get a free upgrade. No affiliation, just a happy customer.8-)

I was putting the computer into standby which would wake up almost instantly, but it continued to draw too much power while the car was off for my liking, so I use hibernate (until I get a dual battery setup going) it takes about 10secs to be up and running from hibernate...

The carnetix p2140 has built in startup and shutdown controllers, its a very good little unit...

There is a stack of car pc front end software out there, there are some free open source ones but I think centrafuse is the business...

Do you think Centrafuse would work on PS3?

(Ps3 can run Linux)

I am pretty sure that centrafuse is only written for windows...

they'll allow you to run windows on top of an other OS, but they do not allow you to run windows on a none x86 CPU

I'd say the prime problem on linux is a nice gps/navigation software, at least I do not know a nice one
if that is solved, all the other software is nicely available on linux and you can glue something together rather easy

C.

ps:
what adv. do you see in the ps3 vs. an eg. Via C7 PC?

such is less money than you might think

my whole PC stuff, means Via C7 mainboard, RAM, HDD, case, PSU, TFT Disp, GPS Mouse, FM Card, Spacenavigator, CAN-Bus IF, wires etc... was about 1k AUD
and another 1k AUD for the HiFi things, front component speakers, rear coax speaker, center coax speaker, two bodyshakers and two 4-channel amps, wires etc...

reg. the rugged tablet PC you posted, 6'' display is tiny if you want to read anything while driving, further you would not want to type anything on such a keyboard imho
if you want to go tablet PC, think about this one http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=100041&catGroupId=12871&surfModel=Toughbook-19 you get used ones for an affordable price and, at least mine, does a nice job for years now, eg. some thousand miles in east afrika

I have had that Toughbook in my hands and was tempted. Very good readable in bright sunlight standing with the sun directly on the screen in the souq in Dubai.
It is indestructable, but will leave a hole in your wallet.

I know this is an old thread but I didnt think my question was worth a new one!

I am having trouble sourcing a 7" touch screen, can anyone help? My only stipulation is that it must have its own rev cam input and switch so its the rev cam is on as soon as the car starts. other than that, i dont care about brand or location. I have been scouring ebay for weeks, and unless I am completely ballsing up my searches, I just cannot find anything decent at a decent price.

Hope some genius out there can point me in the right direction. Cheers.

Sapient,
I sourced one out of China that was reasonably priced and does the job as you require. Try this link:

I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

If you go that one, you might get it a bit cheaper as well. They usually give you a $10 voucher when you register to place your order
