portable power pack doubles dual bat system

Postby Jack H on Mon Dec 31, 2007 11:54 am

Did the tomuch test yesterday and yep, no brakes to the rear!!!!!!
Pretty much did the same set up as Macca
and we're all good.
Was gonna take it to Toyota to get it done "properly" but if they can't extend it then I'll just wait for the next service for them to check what I've done.

If it falls apart what's the worst that could happen?
Drive with no rear brakes, only been doing it for the last 3 months or so. As long as no accidents.

70000km not bad at all.
My brakes done last week (only 45000km).

They reckon all pads had 3mm left except front drivers side (toyota only checked cos I told 'em it was scraping).
1 pad was 3mm at top and 1.5mm at bottom wearing uneavenly. Odd????

Found this product recently (National Luna portable power pack its called)
Looks like the Dog's Boll#cks if all the claims are to be believed ( I've asked the question if it can handle the AGM type deep cycle bats / combined lead acid primary starting up battery
see www.tlocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?p=17732&sid=9a512d4ecc653eaa309923c3937b6ca2 - 38k for more info:)

I have just orderd a Thumper 75 ah battery pack.Cost $713 sound a lot i suppose but it comes with a battery isolater kit a good set of jumper leads that plug into the pack.So you get a portable power pack for a little more than a dual battery set up.

Its not a serious problem pickle, Its just another everyday thing they(hilux owners) have to deal with. Considering all our utes are made by the same people, using parts from the same manufacturers, I am surprised we have not had the same problems!

Got feed back from National Luna themselves they have assured me that AGM deep cycles would be fine in this unit, so just blown another bunch of $'s getting one (will post pic;s asap)
The other units such as Rap's 36amp (by Waeco) and Thumpers / Projecta battery starter / come portable power units are totally different in being that they require accessories input leads to charge them and / or mains charge (where as the Luna is a true dual batterr system that can be easily removed to reduce weight as well when not needed)
AGM batteries charge up in one third the time under alternator power (make sure your alt is suitable for the AGM however)

The Thumper is not that much different that i can see.You still need to power it from your cars charging system. Is totaly portable has a big 75amp agm battery.2x hella plugs 1x cig plug led power display jumper leads on anderson plugs.Just the isolation system is different its external instead of in the box.Plus its Australian made.Check out the you tube video demo search for Thumper demo.No i have no interest in the company nor do i sell them but i have orderd one they look like the goods for a decent size second battery.Mike :)

Just been looking now at the 30Ah model. I'm no expert but if you were doing camping or something overnight wouldn't this one do nicely for the price. Heck most of us are gonna be stopping overnight then off driving around the next day then returning to the same site or moving on to another the next. So it would be charging whilst your doing that. Can still jump if needed/ Wondering how good the isolator is he dosen't really go into it too much.

Another thought could you piggy back another Anderson plug off that isolator. My folks have a camper trailer with a second battery on it it plugs into their truck by an Anderson plug. Was thinking I could get this with a double adapter and then could connect the trailer one too.

Just had a re-read of the info on the Ebay site. It has no mention of isolating the starting battery while it is charging so to me it seems that the isolator supplied allows both batteries to charge at the same time. That woulod slow down the charging times for both wouldn't it.

The bloke on ebay will do a deal for multiple items (if you phone him) I'm trying to convince myself that I need a 105 thumper and a 85 lt evakool.

A mate would make up the multiple purchase with a 75 thumper.

You could look to do a forum group buy and get it cheeper?

Fresp thx 4 the update, already bought the Luna system though just last Friday (was in stock locally) fitted to a AGM 120amp hour (bought separately,) though good to know we can get here in WA
I got my FridgeMate at local BCF store (ain't had chance to use it yet)
Still I am now a believer that bigger Thumper units would of done equally as good.
Already got a decent portable jump starter that cranks diesels and V8's no worries at all Rambo7 though it's not great for running fridges for long

I get around to same test (but 95 ltr fridge draws a lot more amp's so compare would be difficult) plus 120 amp hour battery (suppose I can measure voltage though) dr Sumulas Miller style test
