Smart alternator list for all tritons

Smart alternator list for all tritons

Postby Sickd on Tue Jan 05, 2016 7:05 pm

Hey guys would it be possible to get a list of the models, and years that have and have not got smart alternators?

I'm really after 2015 MN TRITON 2.5

But for everyone else could we get the rest and is it possible to put it in the directory under dual battery setups,
I've been on Here for a few hours just reading away and still can't get a definitive answer.

I've measure my output voltage its 14.3 but the car was only running for 5 minutes, so not sure if it will change
When driving?

Thanks heaps

It's a short list mate, none of them have them as far as I know (not counting the MQ which I know SFA about). You should be fine.

The simplest way to tell if you have a "smart" alternator is to look for the current sensor which is attached to the negative terminal of the battery.

If you don't have something like this, then you don't have a "smart" alternator.

Note that whether you have a smart alternator or not doesn't much change the type of control system you can use for a second battery. Only that if you do have a "smart" alternator your second battery should either be earthed to the chassis or to a point where the return current will flow through the sensor i.e. not to the negative post of your primary battery. Done this way the alternator will adapt for the change in usage of power as it will be sensed.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Awesome information guys all of this is great knowledge, mine doesn't have the current sensor, and that good to know about the negative ground to the chassis so it will adapt.

I've just put an extra battery under the bonnet, now I can connect it up with the red arc isolator I got for free, just paid for itself lol cheers guys.

I was amazed that my son's 98 jeep's alternator used external regulation from apcm and also monitored the battery's temp. All more complication and potential failure points when compared to integrated regulation.

Auto engineers don't seem to follow the KISS principle.

Hi guys does anyone know how many amps the alternator puts out? I was told I should be seeing 20 amps on my Thumper while charging but the most I get is 5
