Engine starts then stops in seconds

Engine starts then stops in seconds

Postby senatorjohn on Mon Nov 27, 2017 11:28 am

Just completed an engine rebuid on a 2010 MN turbo diesel 4d56. Engine starts then usually stops in a couple of seconds. Sometimes will run much longer if you hold it at about 1500-2000rpm. Fuel pressure appears normal around 50,000kpa provides the scan tool is actually measuring pressure and not the value recommended by the engine computer. Starts immediately after stopping and sounds ok when running. Any idea on the possible causes.

When it does stop are you able to push the plunger on top of the fuel filter or is it hard, sounds like its sucking air in the fuel line

Hi Wunsie.
Thanks for your reply.
Plunger is soft unless I have just pumped it up. Have found the area of the problem but cannot explain what is actually happening. If I unplug the EGR harness before starting, the engine runs ok. Can plug in the harness while the engine is running and no detrimental effect. Switch off and re start and the problem is back. No check engine light.

EGR valve could be sticking open, as soon as the engine fires it basically chokes on its own exhaust. Seen it in plenty of Navara's but not very often in Mitsubishis. They are easy enough to pull the motor of the valve (4 screws) and check for free operation of the valve, which is basically a poppet valve like an inlet or exhaust valve.

Was about to do a few tests on the EGR valve but problem is not occurring at present. Was running without any inlet hoses on, turbo centre removed, and a blanking plate on the exhaust side body. Connected the inlet hoses up and started the vehicle and runs ok.
