Dual Battery choice

Battery choice

Postby Mudme on Sun Dec 22, 2013 4:23 pm

IS there a reason we have to have such a big battery as a starting battery? And would I be able to use the yellow top I have as a second battery as my starter battery it doesn't have as many amp hours but it has higher cca's then I would be able to have a bigger second battery

You need the bigger cca due to the high compression ratio of a diesel
As well as the speed to turn the crank to help with starting.

The yellow top I have as my 2nd has higher cca's that's why I wanted to know if I could use it as my starting battery then I could get a bigger 2nd batt

Yellow top is fine for a starting battery, prob better as higher cranking amps, just don't run too many auxiliaries off it, which sounds like you won't anyway with a 2nd battery

I have one and slightly modified mine to hold extra items, but it looks good and does the job.

Nice looking battery. I've always been told agm batteries don't like heat and are therefore not good under the bonnet though.

I rekon have a look at that arb box, gets it out of your tub space and keeps everything nice and neat... I might move my second batt. From under the bonnet if they come in at the right price

ABR sidewinder does one like that too. I reckon it's a good idea if you don't have drawers given that otherwise you can't really use that space properly and it keeps the battery up and out of the way.

If you're planning on mounting 'internally' such as in a reasonably sealed canopy area, probably best to make sure it's a sealed AGM/Gel type battery. One is the explosive gas let off during charging, the other is that I think it can cause potential corrosion (?? not 100% sure on second point).

G'day all,

This might be a dumb question but I'm going to ask it anyway...

Has anyone mounted the second battery in a battery box under the tub? (ie. On the style side ute)? I want a battery box I can remove so I can run a fridge at the campsite, but I dont want to mount it in the tub (space there is needed for other stuff).

Any ideas?

Yes it has been done before. On a phone at the moment so won't be able to dig it up for you. Mostly it's been done by mounting on top of towbar cross members

If you want to make it removable throw in an Anderson plug and you are set.

At least two blokes have posted pics of theirs. I have a feeling that a bloke called Mr T might have been the first.

Might be removable (for maintenance and replacement) but not the sort of place you would want to be removing it from frequently as you have to drop the spare wheel. And even then its a little awkward.

I posted some pics of my over the towbar setup a few years back if you are interested. Just search on my handle.
