Diff oil change

Hi all, I am planning to change the diff oil in both the front and rear. I have done a bit of a search and it seems relatively straight forward. I.e. dump the old and in with the new. Just wondering if anyone has and tips or tricks to endure the job goes smoothly and I dont screw it up. How much oil will I need? How do I know when I have put enough in? Is there an easy way pour the oil in without jacking up the car? Etc...

Always remove the fill plug before you remove the drain plug. That way if you have problems removing the drain plug at least you still have oil in your diff.

I had read some ordinary feedback on the forum about the "Tom Thumb" oil pump but I think it made life very easy and would recommend it to anybody preparing for future oil changes

is that for MN? i was looking at doing the same thing. Anyone recommend any brands of diff oil ?
Also looking at doing my gearbox. is that a difficult job?

Yes jaza that is for an MN.

Gearbox is just as easy as is the transfer ;)

Gearbox takes 3.4ltrs
Transfer takes 2.5ltrs

I used the Tom Thumb for all and combined took not much over 30 minutes to do, took longer dragging jacks, axle stands and tools out :lol:

All my oils were Castrol :)

Penrite has been recommended a few times for the gearbox.

Always use penrite there oil quality just far exceeds most other brands and plus u don't so your diffs that often so why not

I dropped castrol out of the diffs, gearbox and transfer and all were still golden in colour so I had no worries using the same again and at the price I paid I couldn't let it go :twisted:

why does the manual say only 1.8ltrs for rear diff 2014 MY15 ???

Is there a different diff oil required if you have the factory rear locker? Talking about an ML but I assume the diffs and oil required is the same?

Asking for a friend - no really... I don't have a factory locker...

The manual doesn't specify a different oil CD so just use what it says, I've never had an issue ;)

I thought as much - LSDs would be different I imagine but never had to look at it. Although I think I had to look up the arb lockers separately when I did mine. Thanks for the post, there's a bloke who will be grateful you took the time when he gets to this thread later.

Where your filler plugs on the rear diff hard to remove? I've wd40 mine, the got a shifter and hammer and given it a go but all I do is knock the shifter a touch loose till it doesn't grab properly then falls off.

Don't use an shifter; they're for idiots :lol:

Use a socket and if you want more leverage use a bit of pipe over the drive bar. Once cracked loose it should be a finger job to wind out.

Mine was very tight bushy, get yourself a socket and some pipe like RHK says

Ended up buying a 24mm spanner and got it off easy, then tried to take diff drain plug out and failed horribly. Gave it a top up instead as it was quite low, took about 500ml. Front diff was easy as. Why not make the rear drain the same as the others?!?!?

x2 ^ Good advice from "RHK".... ;) Don't ever be tempted to use a 'shifter' to undo 'tight' nuts. As their name implies, they'll almost always 'shift' and all that you'll end up with, is a stuffed ie, rounded-off nut and barked knuckles. Your best bet is a good quality 'central-gripping' ring spanner or socket like these, http://www.griptitetools.com which will remove even rounded-off nuts without a problem, because they grip on the 'flats' not the corners of the nut. Hey all,

I know this thread is a bit old but I recently did my transfer case oil.
I have an auto Pajero Sport (South African) which is much the same as your ML triton.
It has the 3.2DiD and the V4A5A gearbox.
As the manual and service manual state it needs 2.5 litres of oil for the transfer case.
To my surprise when I loosened the filler plug quite a bit of oil came out of there.
I continued to drain the oil and then add the new oil. The oil started coming out of the filler hole when I had put around 2.1 litres in.
I'm wondering how it was so full previously? Did they park the car on a steep decline?
Has anyone else experienced this?

What are the oil specifications for the diffs, transfer case and gearbox?

I know the with a limited slip diff you need to put in specific oil. What about the others?

Most oil companies have product selectors on there web pages. All the ones I have double checked with owners book have been correct. With engine oil they tend to suggest there best product even if there are several others in the range that are suitable.

Nulon full synthetic gearbox oil is a good price compared to others.

Thanks for the tip, I had a bit of a look at some of the oil manufactures websites and it looks like they're all using the same system to workout what specs the oil needs to be, which hopefully means they're all coming from a reliable source.

Anyone know if they have crush washers and sizes, are they same as engine sump plug?

They are different to the sump plug. I think they are M16/M18 aluminium crush washers.
Unfortunately I don't have them on me so I can't measure it for you.
