Leaking Turbo

Postby fisky50 on Tue Aug 07, 2012 9:22 pm

Hi all,
Decided after reading up on the EGR issue that I would install a blanking plate. So there I was with the cover off (first time) getting all excited when I noticed oil on the bottom end of the turbo (yes I know I am on the wrong side to fit the blanking plate). Thought that's not right and after looking further also found oil up near the fire wall. Took it to the dealer and was told that Mitsu state that it's okay for a small of amount of oil to be around the 'Outside' of the turbo. They recommended that I wait till the 90k service so they could have a closer look at it, plus the leak at the firewall was coming from a busted injector seal. I pushed and yesterday I got a call saying the new turbo is on it's way :D . So that is a big relief as I am unsure what a turbo costs but I am sure it wouldn't be cheap + the labor. I am hoping that the performance picks up and the fuel usage goes down as it's currently gets mid 13 round town and 10 on the highway, and it's stock besides Cooper ATR 265/65/17's. Now just have to wait to see if it is a busted seal. Will update on how she goes once the new turbo is fitted.

Find me a triton that hasnt got a leak from the turbo without a provent catch can or similar fitted.
they all do, fit a catch can and that will fix it.

Mines covered in oil, personally I think its unacceptable that a new car that U pay 40k for leaks oil
I have had cars fail roadworthy with less
Its a fire hazard as well.

Hey fisky50 how did you go with your oil leaks. My turbo has started leaking around the bottom at 38k and dealer has ordered a replacement turbo without even washing away the oil and re inspecting. I was guessing it was just a gasket weap on the return oil pipe maybe as it hasn't got any worse. Big call for a little leak.

My Turbo was leaking as well. After 20k K's

It looked like this.

Took it to the dealer and they said:
"Inspected the vehicle for oil leak, turbo is not the cause of the leak, due to the location of the rocker cover breather in the intake tube - small amounts of oil vapour escape the rocker cover under boost conditions and vent into the intake tube right in front of the turbo this is normal operation washed down oil - all okay"

Others have said it is ok as well. Seems some leak and some don't.
Still under warranty so if it breaks, they can repair it for free.

Oil around turbo

Postby yakfishdave on Tue Mar 25, 2014 8:02 pm

Hi all, was just doing the under bonnet checks and noticed some oil around the turbo and under it, just wondering if anyone has had this happen to theirs and maybe know what's the cause. Not real worried as should be covered by warranty but will drop by the dealer as soon as I can to see if its something that needs doing now or wait for the next service, (60,000km) in about 5,000km. P.S its a 2011 MN cheers

It's blow by coming from the rocker cover. Under the black engine cover there's a hose that runs from the head to the inlet tube between the air box and turbo.

They all do it. You can fit an oil air separator to filter this and plumb the air back. On its own it's no problem though when mixed with the hot exhaust gas from the EGR system will turn to carbon and slowly but surely choke up your engine until it has no power and throws codes.

Don't worry though were all in the same boat.

;)

Read the below thread, I'm sure this is what your referring to

If it is I've just been approved today for a new turbo 8-)

If it's leaking oil then it would be leaking gases... Any return of power with the new turbo and gasquet? From what I was told if it leaks oil it's prob likely that the vanes also won't be much chop. Is this familiar with anyone?

Took my Triton (35000km) to the dealer this week with oil leaking around the turbo where the alloy part is bolted to the cast iron, and oil on the waste-gate servo. They told me that this is normal and the Mitsubishi 'HotFix' is to wash it down. Are they serious? If that was the case it should be ok to register a car with an oil leak because you can just wash it down, but it isn't. I told them that my Audi turbo doesn't have any leaks and its done 5 x the km of the Triton. When it's out of warranty, I'll bet the next service after that they will try to tell me the turbo is US and needs replacing as it's leaking oil.

Pickerings should know better than that. I used to work there.
At current work, we do about 2 per month. Mits currently have 146 in stock. That should tell you, and them something. You don't keep $360000 in stock without good reason. For comparison, Toyota has 1 hilux turbo in stock.

Cheers for that info. I'll complain to them about it when I go for the next service. It wasn't just a small amount weeping around the joint. It was dripping off the waste-gate, and I only had the 30000km service done 8 weeks ago.

Good to know. I think you are fairly local to me and my turbo now has some oil around the seal. Hopefully your dealer is the one I use because it sounds like they are on top of it.

I bought this issue up on numerous occasions and on the 3rd time they decided to replace the turbo :D

Be patient and let the dealer do the fix their way. If it does keep leaking be sure to point it out to them again and eventually it'll be sorted ;)

I see no real need for jumping up and down as it'll get you know where, I've stayed on side with my dealer and with persistence have had plenty of things replaced to date
