Clutch rattle to be fixed under warranty - a win

Postby oldplodder on Mon Sep 01, 2014 7:54 am

Hi,
MN 2012 GLX triton - obviously manual!
Good news, local dealer has come to the party to fix the clutch rattle. Fixing at Mitsubishi expense.
It was getting quite noticeable when warm, a metallic clatter coming from the clutch when the clutch pedal was out and gearbox in neutral.
Disappears when the clutch pedal is in.
Only have 31,000k up, and have complained about it since new at 1500, 15,000 and 30,000km services.
Of course the dealer tried to explain it by other things first, only doing their job for Mitsubishi.
Was told to bring it back when hot and rattling. Was passing and it was bad last week, so called in.
Pulled in and didn''t turn the engine off, the manager said he heard it form the other end of the workshop.
Talking to the workshop manager, there is a known Mitsubishi fix, and the new clutch disc has been ordered.
Waiting now to see if the service centre tries to claim a payment for existing wear.:o)
Other interesting comment from workshop manager.
He asked has it always been serviced here - yes.
"Then we better replace it".

Had the same issue with my ML. Easily noticed in fast food drive thrus. I heard it way too much  Mine was replaced too but the did sting me for wear. I had to buy the clutch plate as mine was cooked. A combination of Mt Torrens and my shit driving did that. 50K on that one. The next did 90K with no adverse behaviour before the missus wrote it off.
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

Mine was the springs in the plate itself. The thrust bearing was fine

Not saying right or wrong but that's pretty unusual, especially with similar symptoms of noise stopping with clutch in.

Well. Good news.
Mine is getting a new clutch next week under Warrantee. They have ordered the clutch plate and apparently it is a 9 hour job to replace, so they need the Ute for 2 days.

Mine is a lot better.
No more rattle.
No extra charge, but they did have the MN for 2 days.
Clutch pedal feel has changed too.
Firmer feel, and take up point is more noticeable.

Mine went in at 22000 for the thrust bearing causing a squeak and at 29000 was back again.. so might take it back and see what happens. They put a new clutch and thrust bearing in it last time.

Well. New clutch is in and it has made huge difference to the Triton.
Gears are not at notchy and the clutch feel is completely smoother.
$0 full warrantee job. Even got a Shitter Commodore as a loaner for the 2 days.

Good Job, Clarence Coast Motors.
Thanks to Belinda and Trevor in the Service Dept.

Hi guys, i have a question.
When you say the rattle noise is cause by the springs, wich springs do you mean? The round helix springs on the clutch disc? Or the springs plates or "fingers" on the diaphragm of the clutch cover?? I just gor my clutch replaced, i bought a valeo brand, since my old clutch was slipping on 4th gear a lot, the new clutch feeling is good, there's no slip at all, but i have that rattle noise, when the tranny is in newtral, an the engine iddling, the noise dissapear when the clutch is pressed, and comes back again when the clutch is off, but the noise also dissapears if when iddling and in newtral, i rev the engine just a little, so the noise goes away.

So having this noise occuring, i decided to replace the throwout bearing, since the valeo bearing seems to me to be kinda weak, with some plastic body and not to beefy, so i bought a japanese "koyo" bearing, wich was identical to the one that came out with my old clutch, and installed it this morning, and the damn rattle noise is still there, with the exact same symptoms i mentioned early, so, i didnt check for the clutch disc, assuming it was the bearing, so again, when you say the rattle noise was due to the spings, are those the springs on the clutch disc? Or the diaphragm springs?? Please let me know, im affraid it might be some transmission bearing, and im hoping not having the transmission opened :(

Help me guys, thanks!!!

Hi, My MY12 MN has a very loud squeel when the clutch is pressed in. The dealer says might be thrust bearing but will have to replace clutch at my cost as metal shavings have gone everywhere. If the trust bearing failed and sent the metal shavings all over why should I have to pay for that? I'm on the 5 / 10 year warranty. Clutch is not slipping at all, any advice?

It is the cushion springs in the clutch plate, mine was replaced (plate only) at 39800klm, there's now a hot line fix for the problem. It is a known problem with a range of plates apparently after a new clutch plate it is better than.

MMAL hot line fix number is MN21-001 , which I referred the dealer to. Done in 3 days while I was on holidays.

It was a worn thrust bearing, $1680 for a clutch kit and 2 weeks I have the car back. Tried to get it for warranty they were having none of it, they said it is a wear and tear part? Got to love the stealers.
