Thanks for the reply's guys , I'll try to find out what oil they put in it they said they replaced the 1st and 2nd gear hub sleeve assembly I'm wondering if it could be a synchro problem.I guess changing the oil is the next step if I don't have any luck with the dealership.

hi fellas...i have a 2015 mn from new.It has nerly 45000 on it now and mine is also a bit difficult in the cold from 1st to 2...once its a bit warm shes pretty good.My work partner has the exact same model ,,,his is the same.At the next service im going to change to fully syn oil for gerbox and diffs.

I stuck Nulon's smooth shift full synth in at first change (45k) and it was a different box.

I've used all the recommended Nylon fluids through the drive train (motor to diffs) and up to 215k now.

Mines a ml but used to be a dog on some cold mornings. Most times (at this stage I still had standard tyres) I'd just take off in second.

putting penrite full syn in it tomorrow..my mate/mechanic said it will fix it...he did explain it to me ..something about the oils too thick when cold and doesnt get behind something in the synchro.

I had the same problem with a Nissan 720 ute I restored many years ago and suspecting the gear oil to be to thick for the syncro rings to work properly drained the gearbox and replaced the oil with SAE30 engine oil. End of problem gear changes became an absolute pleasure and sold vehicle a couple of years later still working perfectly.

Had the fluid replaced with penrite 75/85w full synthetic in transfer case as well and clutch adjusted..100 times better ..very happy.

Hi guys new to site have a mn GLXR man having issues with 3rd hard to select, I know there have been issues
With people 2nd to third had that changed the gearbox oil seem to help 2nd but 3rd is tricky to get in have to try a couple of times to engage. Issue I have is I’m 2nd owner now with 143000kms knowing Mitsubishi knows this has been a issue do you think I can push for warranty???

Always a problem with preowned vehicles, just can't know what they've copped.

So have you tried the oil change?

Thanks RHKTriton yes changed the oil at 130k service all services are carried out, the vehicle was serviced by the selling dealer but i have taken it to my local mechanic who has carried out the services on the last three being 120k 130k 140k, he noted that he had trouble selecting 3rd at the time i had no issues it was more 2nd gear hard to select when cold. Just said to keep a eye on it and changed the gear box oil not sure of the brand used but will see him tomorrow and ask. Have booked into local dealer next week for them to drive it with me so I can show them the issue.

I am in the same boat, 2010 GLXR with 135k purchased at 95k. My issue is that it wont select third when moving down from fourth. Changing up is never an issue, but when changing down into third I have to select second or a least get it into the gate and then third is selected fine. There is no need to release the clutch in second, just slot it into the second gear gate then back to third. Double clutching and matching revs makes no difference at all.
There is never any crunching, so I suspect it is not the synchro issue. I am suspecting an issue with the selector fork or rod. My next plan of attack is to pull the box out and have a look to see if any clips, retainers or detent balls are missing. Ive done everything else on motor vehicles but never a gearbox - so am a tadd nervous. Local gearbox shop (Darwin NT) quoted $2500 for new bearings as a start point for a quote but natrualy cant give me an estimate without pulling the box apart.

I have done plenty of reading on the third gear issue and mine appears quite unique to all other posts.

Have you considered pulling the top cover off the box and checking the actual gear lever mountings to ensure it is moving in the correct alignments?

That would be a good initial port of call - really hoping to find a shagged lever!!

I had the syncros changed in my 2012 mn.....35000km.....i found it hard to go down from 4th to third and got locked out of second. I could initially double clutch it but that didnt last.
Mine was out of warranty (years)but they did come to the party...i paid $400 they paid the rest.
Works like it should now (better after changing the fluids after 1000k).

Hi guys been working on my issue and seen a few more
Posts. So far since nov 2017 I have sent a email to MMAL they wanted the vehicle taken to local dealer as they cannot comment on my vehicle. Fair enough did that explained what was happening spoke to the service manager about my findings and my issues with hear chano. He agreed that this was a issue on the manuals so put it forward to MMAL as a claim. Got a answer of being knocked back by MMAL from the dealer and they are in the middle. So sent another email to MMAL got the same person from Nov2017 saying it’s
on the basis it’s out of warranty and again there are procedures in place for claims and that MMAL are committed to there customers but cannot comment on my vehicle due to not knowing the condition it is in and to take into the local dealer. So again off goes a response of already done that had vehicle presented to dealer about concerns whom have called
Me saying MMAL have knock back the claim, now your telling me to yet again take it back to the dealer once again.
Issue is second gear to third nearly impossible to get into gear consistent fight and need to double clutch (sometimes works not all the time) so if NA to get go to 4th as long as I have enough speed or go back to 2nd if the rev’s and speed are not to high. I have seen people ask about the hot line fix number , does anyone know it and provide it??? Love the Ute but the gear thing is really starting to pee me off. All service carried out yes i am the2nd ownerbut consumer law is FIT FOR Purpose if this is a known issue then regardless of the kms some help should be provided.
