Engine temps.

Postby Kegsy on Sun Aug 08, 2010 12:56 pm

G'Day guys,

I've recently got a scangauge due to the massive recommendations throughout the forum.

When I first got my MN 2.5 manual GLX, I thought the temp gauge was sitting a little high. It sits just over half way on the gauge consistently.

The scangauge shows my truck's WT running at 87-88 degree's constantly, even in very cold weather on my way to work at 4am with no traffic to deal with.

Just wondering what most people get from there trucks? I was expecting low 80's from the truck in cold weather on an easy run. Just a little concerned once my ARB bullbar is fitted next week that temps will rise when the summer months come later in the year.

Or am I just being overly cautious due to having a new toy? :D

I have the ML, 3.2 Manual,
My temps sit between 78 - 80 degree's, thats not to say my reading is correct however it's all about consistency, if I see the temps rise from that figure then i now I have early warning of something going wrong.
My temps do rise above this when towing the camper up hills which one would expect though the temp does come back down one I am over the hill.

Regards,
Darren.

Hi Kegsy,
i have had my MN GLX-R just over a week now, i noticed the temp gauge as well, mine is exactly the same position on gauge as yours, but already had the ARB bullbar fitted prior to picking it up. So i dont think the bar will make any real difference. But i live in the middle of the outback and temps in summer can be 2 weeks straight over 40 degrees so i hope this wont be a problem in summer.

I got my scangauge before my ARB Deluxe bar, i had the standard GLXR Nudgebar and Narva 225's on. it was 87-88deg constantly before and after ARB bar. ive peaked out at 90deg, full throttle in 4th up a nasty hill towing a trailer with 220kg of dirtbikes, about 90kg of fuel and 30L of water and our riding gear

i was under the impression the bar would ruin air flow, which it does but the thermo fan will drop you back to 86 or so then cut out rise back to 88 and keep cycling. The frequency will depend on ambient and how hard your working the Truck. (every time i say truck i know chicky is getting a little more pissed, sorry mate)

Thanks guys, I suppose its not too far from the norm then.

I'll keep monitoring before and after the bar and see what happens.

79 - 82. does go a little higher in summer if working hard but will come back to about 82 once going gets easier again.

0 degress in winter it still runs at about 79-80 once warmed up.

ML 3.2 with scangauge and ARB deluxe bulllbar.

whats the Major differences between the MN and ML apart from the Engine Capacity>?
might be the 2.5 working a little harder?

Any other thought Tritonians?

I'm tipping they run the engine a little warmer to reduce the emissions level

I saw 103deg yesterday.... I got caught on a high tide on a very long beach it stayed on that mark for about a minute, 1st gear foot flat only just crawling along as soon as I got some speed back up(air flow) it droped down to 98. When I got to the exit I set the turbo timer for 5mins and went to watch the kids in the water came back 10mins later and the scangauge was still showing 84deg.

My max has been 110, and I have seen over 100 on a few occasions.
Towing across the Nullarbor into a head wind in the middle of summer.

We slowed down a bit and locked out 4 gear on the auto- wouldn't/ couldn't maintain lockup.

will see it over 100 if towing the van up long steep hills like Cunninghams Gap, Toowoomba range, and also some of the longer steeper hills on the Hume.

It changes the tone of conversation in the cab pretty quick. Crawling along foot flat, rooster tails of sand hitting the front windows looking at the scangauge.... :? and the 8yo say's "hey dad the waves look good here stop i wanna go for a swim".....

No scan gauge but I had mine sitting about a needle width off the red while at coffs when trying (and failing) to get up 'mama bear'

Backed down the hill a bit and just let it idle, temps came down to normal within 5-10min

I'm thinking the red zone is 115 degrees. I have had it at 110 and wasn't near the red zone. On my ML anyway

I noticed my temperature increased by around 4-5 degrees since the installation of the ARB deluxe bar! Previously the highest I got with the boat on the back was 90 degrees now i can hit 88-90 degrees with no load on the back! Interested to see what happens when I tow the boat.....

i know people have looked at a digital temp guage but my appears to sit over the half line as well, but if you look at the temp guage you will find that a bit above the "half way" line is really the half way.
