I replaced the rubber cap on the vacuum tube this morning, it was incredible how much the original cap had swollen in comparison to the new cap,
Anywho here's the part number if anyone is after it.

Quick question has anyone experienced hard power steering when the solenoids have failed as well or this could just be unlucky timing both have issues??

Your default is 4wd if you lose vacuum so since solonoids failed front diff is engaged it will be a bit firmer or harder to steer cause it's in 4wd.

I would not be driving it on sealed roads until the issue is solved.

It can cause severe damage to the drivetrain

Sorry if this has been covered but it seems no body has had the sane type of symptoms as me.

My issue started as the flashing light while in 2wd but that stopped some time ago. I rarely use 4wd mode and it may have been 6 months since last using it now I can't select 4wd mode. If I put it into 4H the light won't even register but if I go 4L the light will flash. I disconnected the lines on the vaccume solenoids and ran the car then out them back on and the 4wd system seemed to work correctly again. I was only going up and down the driveway testing it but this was short lived when I had to muck around to get it out of 4wd. Then after restarting the car again it was back to the original issue of not selecting 4wd. Also you can't physically select 4h while moving it almost starts to crunch.

So after reading how the system works would I be right in leaning towards the solenoid on the front diff over the vac solenoids in wheel arch? As it doesn't want to select 4wd at all?

Cheers

Sounds like a simple vacuum leak, remove and refit the little rubber cap on the vacuum line, should be a temporary fix, the cap is found up the top of the firewall behind the rocker cover area,

I was starting to think that but have checked all the lines and that cap is in perfect condition. I can get the two new solenoids for $110 so i think I'm going to start there.. :S

Give the cap a clean and refit just to see what happens,
my previous cap appeared to be good aswell until i compared it to a new one,
for the sake of a minutes work it will rule it out or not,

The photo below shows the general area in the red square, cannot see it properly and you will need to go by feel,

The other photo is the rubber cap.

Check the plugs still no luck, it started after a service, then went away and only come back after I washed the car on the weekend? I'm pretty sure it is in 2wd and does engage to 4x4 just through feel. Anyone have some ideas ? Much appreciated

u need to see if the arm is moving on the diff
remove covers and lay under car get a second person to engage the 4wd lever and you should see the arm pull out of the front diff if it does then you are on the good path i might just be the switch in the diff housing and not activating or a broken wire to it check them as well
if need more help i will find a picky and a write up of it..

don't forget, the engine needs to be running so there is vacuum to work the solenoids

Well there you go, after owning my 2006 ML for 7 years this is the 1st problem ive had.
4WD not engaging and no light on dash, then light flashing in 4WD low.
Thanks to you guys/gals on NewTriton Ive got somewhere to start looking.
Pity I had to get towed out of situation by a Hilux.

I'm not sure any amount of washing is going to remove that stain....

Hey guys, quick question on this as I've had the flashing when first starting and then the 4x4 lights goes out as soon as the engine starts and vacuum is back.
Question is, if it's running and in 2wd, jacked the front wheels off the ground, should the CVs still rotate with the wheel? The front tail shaft doesn't rotate. 2007ML.
Cheers
