Dirt road rules: dos and donts

So I am back from my first trip, and It made me think about
Thinks I should know as a beginner.

The first think a guess is giving way on narrow tracks, reason I ask this first is I watched the 4wd in front of me have another 4wd clip his side mirror around a corner cause the other 4wd was going to fast and didn't have time to give way.
Is there an unspoken rule about this?

And any other unspoken rules I should know

You will come across a few muppets out there on the tracks. The way I figure it is if you can get out the way do so if not take it easy and hopefully one of you will be able to get out the way. ;)

I agree Boycee, can't guarantee the other guy will use any courtesy or common sense :?

All things being equal I reckon the uphill guy has right of way, it's much easier to reverse down hill than up, and once the downhill vehicle goes past a turnout the uphill vehicle can move off the road, it's easier to get going again down hill 8-)

Other than that, do the safest thing for you ;)

Always leave plenty of space between vehicles following in convoy. Just in case the vehicle you are following gets into difficulties, you have time to stop. Also helps with staying out of dust.

- Headlights on.
- H4 engaged.
- Take it easy and do not get complacent.
- Appropriate tyre pressure.
- Look ahead and behind. If you swerve right to miss a pothole make sure no one is attempting to overtake you. I had a near accident yesterday when a young buck in his ute thought it would be a good idea to overtake our convoy at high speed.

Definitely on!!!
Sometimes you can see the flicker of a light through the trees before you can see the vehicle coming towards you.

When driving on tight tracks with blind corners - I always drive assuming that some idiot will be coming around a corner doing 80, thinking they're the only ones on the road... Drive to the conditions :)

I totally agree...It is so easy to drive along not seeing another vehicle for a couple of hours, to think that your the only vehicle on the road. If you get two people driving this way when they meet things can get ugly. Take it abit slower when you can't see, always move well left over crests and look out for dust in the distance signifying another vehicle so you can prepare yourself.

Also brake before entering corners not in them. It is a hell of a lot easier to lose the rear end on dirt.
Cheers,
Josh

in a convoy I prefer the first & last car to have headlights on.
If you are the lead car & can see headlights behind you know you have not lost anybody.
This does depend on the time of day of course.
It also helps other oncoming cars to know that there is no more vehicles coming there way in the convoy

Yeah in convoy on dirt roads I put the parkers on because the tailights will help the person behind get some distance and track direction perspective.
I hate to advocate drugs, sex, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.

Having a flag can be useful to for dune crossing especially near city areas and motorbikeers. Also dont be ashamed to pullover and let someone pass you. Youll probably find em with overheated brakes at the bottom of the next downhill anyhow.

If someone needs a tow or CB or phone call be nice we all get caught out at somestage.

Wish that was always true 2nd I had problems coming out of Kings Canyon and the only vehicle that stopped was an older couple going the other direction, everyone else just drove past.

I normally slow down and stop and at least check that they are OK
Or as Speedy Gonzalez once said, it won't hurt, did it
