Getting the Horn/Airbag Pod off the steering wheel

Postby RHKTriton on Sun May 15, 2011 3:51 pm

I've looked for it and the manual is lean on this area.

How does the thing come off? It looks like its retained by spring clips but I don't want to force/break anything.

Disconnect battery and there are 2 t40 i think tourqx bits in either side of the steering wheel and it will pull off. Be careful if pulling steering wheel off tho, mark the clock spring to stop it from turning other wise it will break.

G'day Chaser- just wanted to get the button off as had a cricket when driving on rough surfaces after a column replacement. You can see spring retainers when pulling on the horn/bag button but does get past a certain point.

I gather the clock spring is connected between the wheel and column support.

one thing to consider, i changed a clock spring and since then my horn works sometimes, went back to thw dealer to have it corrected 3 times already. Works fine for 5 days or so then it does not work all the time after that, a lil disturbing while driving

Longranger1;

If your hornbag is sitting on the steering wheel your gonna need a new column in your future. Don't know if damage caused by hornbags is covered by warrnaty? What's da back seat for?

Sportero, your dealer is probably getting an obsession for your horn...no? Sounds a bit like the chiropractors setting up the next visit.

My other half is starting to take a liking to driving the Triton. It is keeping her from getting behind the wheel that is the issue.

You can probably claim this as a warranty job RHK. I had a squeak coming from the clock spring and it was replaced under warranty.

The noise is gone now since I've had a yank around trying to get it off. (now that sounds wrong!)

The problem is that the "creaky" noise only started after warranty work on my steering column Joe. I'd much prefer that the things were built/assembled correctly in the first place and not be touched for the next 400,000km.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I thought for the sake of future forum searchers I would just clear this one up.

To remove the horn pad all you need to remove is the 2 x T40 torx screws and the whole horn pad removes effortlessly. Make sure you unplug the horn and airbag connectors via the bottom access panel on the wheel first.
To remove the clock spring you need to remove the steering wheel from the column using a 17mm socket and a wheel puller.
Clock spring is approx $350 from MMA, or $100 from your wrecker (if he has a Triton in the yard whose airbag has gone off, otherwise they try to sell the whole airbag/clock spring assembly together and can ask up to $1100!!)
Cheers

For those interested, this is what your clock spring looks like.

The spring is not actually a spring at all.....its a wire tape coiled in side the body, the roller allows it to either pay off or pay on the tape to the coil.

This is the typical failure of the clock spring.....over time the thin wire in the tape breaks open circuiting the airbag squib circuit...leading to the airbag light staying on.

Easiest place would be in front of the radiator where the actual horn is.

Here is a question then, and this is purely because my airbag light is on and the code says that a squib is fired/open...but if I replace the clock spring will the airbag light just go out or will it need to be reset?

Cool cool, thanks for all of that, now to see if Mitsubishi will do one for me nice and cheap or if I just need to buy the part and do it myself!

If I do end up doing it myself, what is the torque for when installing the steering wheel nut?

I've lost track of this. Do you have mn or ml?

If Mn it's more likely to be the cabin wiring harness and fixable under warranty.

If ml then ignore the above

Hey Dave, yeah it's an ML. $265 for the part, saving myself the $120 in labour.
