265/70/17

Need something to get you rolling?

265/70/17

Postby Qball on Wed Oct 14, 2009 7:25 am

I know this has been done to death but just wanted to make sure before i had them fitted.

My tyre guy is adamant the cooper ST 265/70/17 will not fit my triton.
Have a GLX-R 09 model currently with 245/65R/17 Brdgestones on it.

Can I definately tell this guy to put the 265/70/17's on?

Q,

bet him that if you are right you get %50 off. or maybe one tyre for free.

they fit. no rubbing. standard suspension.
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

Maybe the tyre guy is concerned over the legal implications for him?
If you put the 2 set's of specs in here,

http://www.wheelsmaster.com/rt_specs.jsp

It calls for a minimum 7.5'' rim width for the larger tyres.
They are 804mm diameter compared to 750mm or 7.2% larger diameter.

Assuming I haven't stuffed up in the figures, although they clear everything, for insurance and the cops they might be another matter[on the road]?

So these will not be road compliant?

Obviously do not want the insurance company to tell me to take a hike if something happens.

Sierra, Coopers say that 7" rims are fine for this tyre, so that should not be a concern.

As if cops would give a craps a.. over this, they would not be able to tell. Insurance should not be a prob but this is Q's task to sort.

Insurance is not an issue.

Picked this up regarding Vicroads-

"The rim diameter can be increased by 50mm (2") but the overall tyre diameter cannot be increased by more than 15mm.

The track can be increased by up to 25mm, but not on cars with front-wheel drive and McPherson struts, nor with diagonally split brake systems."

I remember now that came up before about Coopers and the rim width.
I agree the cops are unlikely to spot they are more than the 15mm allowance on tyre diameter.
That just leaves insurance?
I would be spewing if I wrote mine off and the insurance assessor spotted the tyres and dissallowed the claim and that's exactly what they would do. So perhaps best to ring them let them know on the basis of upping the value by $500 to get it on record?
There's no point in having insurance if you give them a get out of jail free card when you need it and they are way over the 15mm limit.

Hmmm... see I got this size on (the tyre is huge to me).

If the overall tyre diameter has gone from 750 to 804 as Sierra posted, then according to the law, it's 39mm bigger than is allowed. The tyre place told me the same figures but didn't refuse to put them on.

Insurance will only bring tyres up if it was found that the tyres caused the accident (not likely). Police - well they probably have a real problem with you to begin with if they pull you up on it.

But technically, they are not road compliant.

265/60/17 are the same 750mm dia but how about 265/65/17 at 776mm and only 11mm over the limit with 3.5% difference?
They might be a good compromise to slip under the radar?
The insurance company would only have point out the tyres are illegal and 'could' have contributed to the accident to cancel the claim. You know how they work when it gets down to money and details of the contract.

265/65/17 tyres,
only 2 options that I know of in this size that are LT construction.

Plenty that are passenger construction.

LT are BFG A/T and Bridgestone 694's

The overall tyre diameter increase is based on max recommended manufacturer sizes.

This should actually mean the max manufacturing overall diameter is 776mm plus a 3% variance based off 265/65/17 for 09 Triton.

This takes total allowable to just under 800mm plus the 15mm increase allowable means i should be ok with anything up to 815mm total overall.

The Cooper ST 265/70R17 7 804mm overall (this from cooper tyre specs sheet)

If this is all correct then I think there should be no issues.

Problem with that is that the triton only runs a 245/70/17 tyre (from memory)

Actually looking forward to see if the new MN with 7.5" rims has a wider tyre.
seems a bit weird, so either the rim size is incorrect or the tyre size might/will be increased.

Most of the wagons run 265/65/17" rubber, with the 7.5" wide rim.

Qball,
I must confess you lost me there.
Maximum manufacturer size is 245/65/17 which is 750mm dia and you can go to 765mm dia legally.
But 815mm is OK?

As long as you're sure, that's the main thing but I would be interested in the reasoning if you could do it again so it's idiot proof please?

I am in the same boat - Just picked up an 09 dual cab with 245/65/R17 and wanted to put on the Cooper STT 265/70/R17's.
Scared out of my mind now about insurance and warranty!
I too will call my insurance company and see what they say. Might call Mitsubishi to see what the max they recommend is, as it might be larger than what they have put on (I hope!)

in qld biggest tyre you can put on your triton is 255/70/16 i know bfg make a AT in this size, 14mm larger in diameter(MAX DIAMETER INCREASE 15MM) then standard 245/65/17 or 245/70/16 and is under the 1.3X rule for width

Just had the install with 265/70/17's and RAW suspension.

Triton feels fantastic and looks great too.

I do know some guidelines changed in Jan 09 and will also come back to you when i have a little time Sierra to explain above post.

Needless to say I am confident I am within (or so close its not funny) the guidelines.

Listed new tyres and suspension with the insurance company, no negative feedback, they may plead ignorant but at least officially it is now on record.

Cheers,

Cheers,

That's the main thing. The insurance company have recorded the change and accepted liability. If it ever came to the crunch in court, they would be deemed the party having expert knowledge and couldn't refuse liability.
Sounds like it rides and looks a lot better. 8-)

I do have 255/70/17 on the MMC std rim 17"x7JJ and suspension, I do have 255's only do to the fact that 265's were not available in Europe at that time (may 2009 - Yokohama ATS).
265's are fitting perfectly on std rim and suspension...

Anyway good choice mate (Qball) and have a nice ride...

Called insurance today (GIO)
Was told all is ok aslong as I do not change the rim!
Still confused but going for it anyway.
Once fitted I will list them with GIO and be done with it and finally be able to get out there and start having some fun again!

Nice choice. I will post some pics later today.
The ride is fantastic, along with the suspension and the seat spacers, it is humming along nicely now.

Next have to get the ARB bar fitted and I am done.

I added in a Pioneer DVD and Navigator into the centre console as well. New Focus speakers to go with it.

what´s the maximum % increase allowed in the country you live?
I drive an almost 10% increase in higth tire, but there is not such a rule here in mexico, as far as I know.
BFG KM2 235 85 16, find it a very agile tire and excelent on road with 33 35 psi. :)
