Help please - Standard size GLX-R 245/65/R17

Need something to get you rolling?

Help please - Standard size GLX-R 245/65/R17

Postby JohnW on Sat Nov 07, 2009 9:41 am

Hi

The new triton i have purchased GLX-R has standard 245/65/R17 tyres.

I wanted to change the tyre to a more robust tyre, like a BF Goodrich AT, but happy to look at alternatives if suggested. What I need help with is what size and brand I can get to match the 17 rim, not changing the rolling diameter for speedo ect.

Can someone please assist?

Thanks.

you might want to change the speedo, Most of them are out by around 10k's. :o
Not sure what you can get in the way of a seventeen but if you can get a 32 inch tyre that will correct the speedo. 8-) Good luck, plenty of guys on here have the 17's so i am sure someone could help. 8-)

I run 17" tyres on mine and "upgraded" to 265/70/17.
I now have correct speedo (agrees with GPS)

I have a set of 17" steel rims and 265/70/17" MTZ's for sale in classifieds as then you only have to deal with the noise on weekends.

Be aware that the larger tyres can increase fuel consumption

Sucks to be you, glad I bought a 3.2 :o

I got the BFG ATs in 265/70/17 and it corrected my +7% error in speedo to -1% error :)

Expensive tyres though .. 4WD26's offer is cheaper from memory!

Mine works a little different it seems - the leaseplan equivalent company uses a vehicle fleet management place which all suppliers have to go through to get approval before doing anything with the car - i.e. to get a service done, Mitsubishi have to ring up the management to ask if its ok to perform some works - same with the tyre place IF I want the lease company to pay for the works straight away.

So, going about it that way, I asked the tyre place to put on the 265/70/17s and they came back to me to say the management wouldn't let me do that because they were out of regulations. All that meant was I had the tyres put on and paid for them out of my own pocket, and sent the receipt to the lease company for reimbursement. So if I've done my calculations right, each tyre only cost me $270 odd since it comes out of my salary pre-tax $$.

It's a bit of a pain in the butt because when it does come to servicing, I don't get to know what is happening with the cost side of things unless I chase up the management company myself - and I couldn't be assed doing that. I just have to have faith in the management that they will tell Mitsubishi what they will and wont pay for under warranties etc.

Anyhoo... I digress.. JohnW, was your question adequately answered?

Check the web most tyre companys have a tyre chart on there site that will tell you everything you need to know about the particular tyre you're looking at rim size, profile, od size, speed, load etc; Bob Jane & the like do the same for rims (Will this rim fit my car? window) :|

Thanks everyone.

If I get the size 265/70/17, and don't worry about the speedo, is it still legal and insured?

I know I am a bit late on this particular conversation but please consider this:

1) The OD of the factory tyre is about 750mm. The OD of the 265/70/17 BFG is 806mm so is technically not legal and may be a problem if the insurance company want to be difficult as legally 50mm is the maximum increase.

2) Because of the load rating you *must* have a 112 or equivilant rating replacement and this narrows down the choices considerably to basically only the LT variants.

3) That tyre size is rare enough without the added load restriction

4) The 265/65/17 has an OD of 776mm and is a *very* common size so not a bad option if you only want a modest size increase and for everything to stay 100% legal.

Out of curiosity I got my 265/75/16 BFG AT spare today (brand new never been on the road) and measured the O/Dia very caefully and precisely and it measured 800 mm spot on so don't take the website specs as totally correct :o
Theoritically this should make them legal going by the + 50mm rule/code :? :?
