235/85/16 and rim offset

Need something to get you rolling?

235/85/16 and rim offset

Postby 4wd26 on Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:26 pm

Alright got off my arse tonight and fitted up my new van tyre and rims to the triton to make sure they "will fit in an emergency) ;)

I researched my options pretty well (even going through a set of rims) that were not right- would have required a 50mm wheel spacer for the van (perfect fit on the triton but not worth the risk).

Anyway got a set of Goodyear kevlar MTR 235/85/16 tyres cheep on ebay (brand new...)
needed a set of rims, these needed to be rated at 1100kg (van is a single axle 2 tonne offroader) and zero offset, so not much choice.

Got some CSA rims in 16x 7 0 offset

load rating of tyres more than adequate

Fitted they don't look much in white- but has to match the van not the truck, missed the brake calliper (couldn't get a photo of the clearance but would say less than 5mm.

very hard to photograph, but this combination does not stick out past the guards, increase in track.

don't mind the mess.

slightly bigger than the 265/70/17 I run normally, but the 265's also have 20,000kms.
measured 806mm for the new 235's and 802mm for the 265's (still 11-12mm tread remains on the 265's down from 14mm)
I also tried one of the original van rims and tyres and can confirm 15" rims in a zero offset will foul the brakes.

checked out the back of a mitsubishi alloy and you can just make out what we already know.
17x7 rim JJ +38 offset (sorry for the crap pic)

Hope this is of help to someone.
BTW- Nissan patrols run zero offset rims

Ordered +7 offset to make sure the track wasn't too wide

235/85/16 km2 next to 265/70/17 Dick cepek mud country

Looks good - definate difference in track and weight of the steel wheels compared to alloys, felt through steering

Those tyres look in great condition
they sure look a fair bit larger than your dick cepek (did you ever measure tread depth as new)

Oh BTW your a woose- what sort of offset is +7

Look at the tyres on the Paj.....

They are only 235's Sinwolf. Normal 32's or 265's sit out about 25-30mm.

They look much better though 8-)

I'm currently running on 265/75/16 on std alloys...

I want to go to these:

But I can only get them in a 0 offset 8J 16" (I dont want to go to 17 or 18, cause my current 16" tyres are still good)...

But I also don't really want the wheels to stand out too much, cause it throws unnecessary stones/mud up against the vehicle...

Also, I participate in the Bridgeston 4x4 FUNDI challange here in SA... And the wider track makes it more difficult miss those freaken poles !!!

I think you will find the larger tyre diameter you go the worse fuel economy and power will become.

It's a trade off for clearance and grip I guess...

that isn't that bad really, considering you have 32" tyres, bullbar, steel tray, steel cage with canvas. All that weight adds up, trust me.
Remember to also add 7% to your km's travelled each tank, this is how much your odometer is now reading under.

Since taking the big toolbox off mine, my economy has improved out of sight, but I still would be pushing to get 600kms........mine is auto tho ;)
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

yeh i aint complaining for all the city driving. Strathfield to watson bay and back each day, plus a trip to oberon every weekend.
But when my coopers go down i am going to 225/70 just for fuel economy reasons.
i will miss the height but the economy i will apprecieate lol
