Tyre offset for triton rims

Postby RockoWallaby on Mon Dec 06, 2010 9:05 pm

Hey folks
I was considering seeing if triton 17inch rims would fit on my caravan. It currently has standard land cruiser white steel 16 inch rims, with 265/75R 16 duelers. The offset is obviously different, so my choices are replace the stub axles (exy) or fit spacers (dodgy and possibly illegal). Regardless, does anyone know the offset difference between the 2, and whether there are any other spacing differences between the wheel threads? I think clearing the electric brakes would be ok. Only other issue is the diff in load and speed ratings, which I need to check out.
Thanks
Rocko

The caravan offset will be either zero or -10

The triton offset is +38

The PCD (stud spacing is the same) between the triton and most other 6 stud wheels is the same.

Triton wheels will not fit "normal" axles due to the centre hole size (smaller in the Mitsubishis case)

I got zero offest rims for the caravan and fitted 235/85/16 tyres (narrow 32" same diameter as you already have) BUT this combination will fit on a "flared triton" and sit within the guards.

So I could swap (if you have also increased the diameter on the triton which I run 265/65/17) the van spare to the triton in an emergency.

I looked into wheel spacers and lots of other combos (I had a tyre and wheel shop here for a while) and that was the best solution.

Yes, I gathered the offset might be 38mm, and had thought it might just give me enough extra clearance over the drum using spacers to account for the crappy small centre hole size.
Its the benefit of having matching spares that makes me consider it. Nuisance having unmatched, yet so similar, tyres ;)

Not sure about your caravan- but mine is a single axle 2 tonne van, I didn't like the idea of spacers- even though I bought a set and tried them, just too much weight especially as I intended to offroad the van to places like Fraser Island etc.

BTW the 30mm spacers I bought didn't fit, I would have needed the 50mm version.

Nods. Getting some mods and extras done to the van before going away next week, by Caboolture Caravan repairs. They really know their stuff. They weren't keen on spacers either, and looks like too much hassle changing the stub axles.
Their advice this morning...leave as is ;)

I think Cowboy means the Http address of the picture you saved to dropbox. From that you might be able to learn more about the picture.

I'll take anything I can get. That pic is just too small for me to make anything out but looks like it was maybe a screenshot from a phone so maybe the original site will have better resolution?

The wheel could be European or North American, instead of using Google as " .com.au "
Try just " .com" for USA or ".ca" for Canada or ".co.uk" for the UK

Searching the same search in each of these should throw up more results and hopefully point you further in the direction you need

MN GLX alloy 7" wide. The steel rim (spare) on the GLX+ package (4 alloy) is 7" wide

the MN GLXR 17" are 7.5"

Ok slow day at work so been trawling gumtree for some cheap rims to use as an offroad set.

Found a set of rims with some BFG ATs on them(not much life left in the rubber though)

The bloke thinks the rims are 0 offset. Now i assume that this will mean the wheel will protrude further out from the hub mounting point correct ?

Is a 0 offset going to work on a triton ? or will it cause issues with handling, scrubbing etc ?

Tyres that are on the rims at the moment are 265/65/17
Same size will be going back on when they need to be replaced
