Have this week fitted 265/65 17 to my GLX-R, was looking at various comments on this site but wanted to keep within the 50mm rule which should be confimed in Qld mid year. I went for Mickey Thompson STZ's which are their latest release ideal for touring. Worth a look as fit well, fill out the guards alot better than the standard 245's with std suspension. I will get arounf to addin a couple of pics this weekend. Good luck with your choice.

For touring go the 265/70 8-) 32" or same height as 7.5 X 16 and popular 235X85 that most older live axles run. Wont upset anything and fit every way with no lift. The taller tyre will get into the front spash guards and make the 2.5 work hard for touring. Trust me as we do big K's here. 265/75 be fine for play tyres but will rip sht out of the plastic under your guards with out lift and trim.

I'm not a fan of 33's and up on tritons, they ruin a great all rounder.

Ive got a set of 265 75 16 BFG MTZ for play and have no probs with scrubbing out or anything with standard suspension. Heaps of room and legal in that they dont come out from under the flares.
Mucks up the speedo and fuel also noisy but fine for when I put them on (play time only) ;)

we do get reasonable front diff clearance due to the IFS arrangement but you will be dragging your sorry 9 inch up the centre of the track.

I just think for the plenty of people that are reading this, to put on 33's, there are some negatives that, unless 33's are a super must have requirement, may not be worth the half inch of lift they give you. That said, a few are running them, including you. so each to their own.

The basic physics is that you will place more strain on your CV's. Although we have not heard of any front hub failures the use of bigger tyres and particularly the wider offset (negative) can place more strain on the front hub assemblies. The tritons are well made but the more stress placed on them the closer you get to that edge. Braking performance is another thing although (and i have not tested it) 33's on alloys are probably better than 32's on steelies.

I know this is an old post but am I right in thinking that if I change up to 17 inch wheels with 265/70/17 tyres..looking at the Cooper STT which is between an ATR and Muddie, then I will pretty much be running a 32 inch instead of a 31 inch on the 16 inch standard alloys. I have had a quote on the BALLISTIC JESTERs which he said were a +15P offset for the Triton MN with the 265/70/17 tyres.....would 265/75/17 be too high?? I just want to fill a bit of the arch after my Ultimate Suspension Lift and get a more aggressive looking tyre but not a full on muddie..without compromising the handling.

265/70/17 31.6"
265/65/17 30.6
http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-calculator/
265/75/17 is an odd size if it is a size.

Many on here run those two tyre sizes.
Off set +25 to +38 is common
+15 should work.
fuel economy may suffer a little with the bigger tyres.
Where I live going less than +25mm and you are increasing wheel track to much and "illegal"
Again the 32" tyre is illegal.

How much more fuel would you use going from 245 65 17 to a 265 70 17

a mud tread will use more than an all terrain. but you can bank on at least 1-2 l/100 especially with an auto.

I'm wondering what the more common of the 2 sizes is, 265/70/16 or 265/75/16? The easier the tyre is to get the better (and usually cheaper).

running 265/75/16R on 2012 GLR

Postby hellis1230 on Thu Jul 09, 2015 10:51 pm

G'day

I have a 2012 GLR with a 3 inch exhaust and tune. I am looking at changing the stock tyres to 265/75/16R. The dealer said that this may over tyre the car. They recommended going 265/70 instead. I am mainly after the extra lift that the 75 tyres give as I am slowly turning my ute into more capable 4x4. I will also be doing the 2 inch lift aswell from ultimate suspension. Any advise would be appreciated.

Plenty of info in this tyre size all through this forum, long story short, if lightly loaded the 265/75/16 will be fine, but if heavy or towing, much better to drop to the 70 profile, the (roughly) 25mm smaller DIA of the tyres does make a difference. Expect to lose around1-2L/100km in economy too, your speedo will read almost bang on correct (odo will under read slightly tho) and your ute will have much better hold of the road.

Yep as above, I have 265/75 R16's (muddies) and they look awesome and are great off road but they probably are a bit big, it cost me 0.5 l/100km in economy (8.5 up to 9) and they do effect handling and braking a bit but when these are stuffed I will replace with the same

I had 265/70/16's but they looked small so when I finished with them went the 275/70/16 to keep within the 50mm allowance. I now recommend that size to everyone

After the Ultimate lift and a decent set of AT or mud tyres, you will have a very capable 4x4.

I went with a 2 inch Ultimate lift to replace my old 40mm Old Man Emu lift and am currently running BFG AT KO2 in 245/75/16 and find it very good off road.

That being said I do have a second set of rims that I'm going to fit with some 265/75/16 muddies (probably Micky Thompson MTZ) when fun tickets allow. These will be just for when I'm planning serious off road trips so increased fuel use wont be such an issue.

The local tire dealer said that i should get an 8 inch wide rim when going to 265/75r16. I have read alot and most people stay with a 7 inch wide rim. Thoughts??

I am running 285/70/17 on 17x7.5 wheels on my JK.... So 265 on a 7 inch wheel shouldn't be any dramas...

I'm looking at the Bridgstone dueler AT's and the difference between the 265/65 and the 265/70 is $110 per tyre! $260 v $370 why such the big price jump? will the 70 be noticeably bigger than the 65?

Also the sales rep is pushing the General Grabbers hard at the minute 265/70/17 at $269 per. Anyone have experience with these tyres?

If you're talking the D697 then they are a better tyre than the grabbers imho.

It may simply be a case of volume to explain the price difference. 265/65/17 is a fairly common size I think?

Also the largest legal size for a Triton in NSW at least.

Noticeably? well they will be 5% of 265mm taller in the sidewall which I think is about 13mm. That's 12mm taller but I guess to look at it might be 26mm in added diameter. Whether you can pick that extra inch I'm not too sure. I certainly notice the difference changing between those sizes but in my case the bigger set are muddies which probably exacerbates it a bit.

Thanks Cowboy, will i notice a big difference in size from the standard HT 245/65/17 to the 265/65/17 AT's? TBH a big reason to upgrade is filling those wheel archers...
