GLX-R 245/65r/17 tyres

Postby Foggy on Sun Apr 17, 2011 8:02 pm

Seems a little unfair to lock this thread. Those of us with GLX-R models will be looking at new/replacement tyres at some time. If you do a search for 245/65r/17 tyres it comes up blank!!!!

Why not let those with 17 inch rims have a thread where they can swap ideas / news without working their way through 14 pages of info - most of which does not apply!!!\

With all due respect !!!

I've just gotten a set of BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A's fitted. Size 265/70 R17. They fill out the wheel arches nicely and set the speedo right. Managed to trade in my stock spare for $150, got the tyres for $300 each with the trade in

so what is the question you want answered?

about 2 choices in 245/65/17 that will work in our load rating- any tyre website will give you that.

after that there are 100's of choices in 17" tyres, including what the majority run (although not legal) 265/70/17

if your looking at getting the stock tyres again- a wanted add on the forum or visit a tyre shop that offeres trade in and you should pick them up for under $200- see the second post (Fraz91) got $150 trade in- whats the dealer going to do with that tyre- sell it on.

so what were you chasing????

What was I after??

What I got I guess - some discussion about 17" tyres without having to troll through pages and pages.

I'm not sure (and who am I to question) why their seems to be a moratorium on opening new discussion threads. To me it makes for more specific information and makes it much easier to find info that I'm interested in.

Perhaps others don't feel that way. Please don't be offended!!!!

At last count there are 7154 threads, 153,003 posts on the site as a whole as well as 263 topics in the tyres and wheel section alone. Those numbers will have increased by the time I finish typing this.

We're not offended or being difficult about it but lately there have been new threads on tyres pretty much daily in circumstances where the information sought is readily available to those prepared to help themselves.

We're trying to encourage people to help themselves and trying to keep the information in as few places as possible. If we don't we'll end up with 20 different threads about each tyre size (if we haven't already) so you can see why there is a need for moderation.

You also need to appreciate that as mods we see all the threads and sometimes a user (not you) might develop a habit of starting a lot of non productive new threads. Threads started by users like that are more likely to get locked than others in an effort to discourage that kind of behaviour.

The problem-Is the more threads, the more the discussion the harder the search function is to use.

I know its daunting- but there are over 7,000 topics here already- and thats the reason to clamp down on new topics- its most likely been asked before.

Maybe not in the format you wish (i.e 245/65/17), maybe not on the front page, maybe you do have to do a bit of searching/ trolling, but the info is around.

http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=36

hope that helps.

BTW- my april build 2008 GLX-r was delivered with 17" rims- so its not a new problem
I run 265/70/17 goodyear MTR kevlar tyres and have got 55,000kms still a bit to go.
before that I ran 265/70/17 MTZ tyres for 20,000kms before trading them.
factory tyres got run for 5kms to the nearest tyre dealer that would trade- got $100/ tyre back in 2008.

stock tyres are legal ;) you didn't mention LT construction etc.....

what about 245/70/17- wouldn't run this size myself, and never checked if they are legal (+15mm diameter in QLD) but a lot of the tyre manufactures offer this size.

The BFG's i got are LT tyres, so the load rating is fine. And to be honest, unless the tyres are stupidly big (i.e. 35's with a 4inch lift) the coppers aren't going to give two hoots as to whether or not they're legal. As for rego, i'm not sure. just make sure you've got a mechanic who likes you

I know this is off topic, but it seems the place to put this due to other responses.

I also want to note that this is in no way an attack on the forum, the moderators or any members. This is merely an observation and my own opinion. Consider this food for thought or a starting point for discussion, not a "You must do this" statement.

As a new comer to this site I have noticed more and more starting threads being closed with follow up statements essentially stating "We have discussed this" and "please use the search feature".

As a new member I have a couple of concerns with this:

* Even though I have started posts in the past, I am becoming scared to start a new one or ask questions for fear of being shut down.

* I have used the search function and have found nothing that relates because my "keywords" did not match the words used by other people discussing the same subject. (This tyre size is a good example)

* Many times I have found info I have wanted by seeing new threads ... following the inability to find the subject with the search tool.

Now the above may highlight the ineptitude of my search abilities, but as a new comer to the site it is a daunting task to ask questions or navigate a new web site.

To me a forum like this is about discussion and meeting new people, not researching endless pages of thread lists in the hope of finding some info.

As I said, I don't have an answer, but I am sure I am not alone in this feeling / view and if my statements starts discussion that helps build a better site for users and admin alike, than I feel it is valid.

Please understand, I am not trying to start a flame war or state that forum admin are doing something wrong. I am just stating that from my perspective, the current policing of threads may turn users away, especially new ones.

^^^understood

and its a dificult thing to police.

Its not a automatic responce and I will search the authors posts to try and understand what sort of forum member they are and then make a decision on the topic.

There have been 2 mods in this topic explain very nearly the same information. Tyre topics are the ones that will be most heavily policed. They are also the most "opinionated" ;) very hard to be subjective on tyres as you are rarely going to have experienced a selection of treads or sizes on the triton, and experiences on other vehciles should not really be compaired to the triton.

I know I'm chiming in a bit late on this but, especially for those who are newer to the site, the search function can be a little idiosyncratic. You just need to play by its' rules.

If you search for "245/65r/17", you will get nothing. Why? Because the usual way of writing tyre sizes is to put the "R" after the second slash, i.e. 245/65/R17.

So, if you search for "245/65/R17" you will get a few results, but not many. Why? Because most people don't always follow the accepted standard, i.e. they will write "245/65x17" or "245/65/17" or "245x65x17". Unless you hit the nail exactly on the head and use the identical term, you just won't get a result.

So, what to do? Give the search engine some room to move. Remember that it will ignore very short "words" as well as those it considers "common". Try something like "+245*65*17" (returned over 100 matches), or "+2*5***17" (this returned 21577 matches, and may be a bit too broad and need narrowing down).

The point is, the information is there, you just need to sift through it sometimes to find exactly what you want. There is an excellent search tutorial but sometimes you have to be as pedantic as a computer is. Seriously, they don't think like the rest of us.

He suggested goin to 16in but that didnt appeal to me much, im a bridgestone fan anyhow, always run dessert duellers on my hilux and never had a drama. Always get my bridgestones from Gooyear cause the local Bridgestone dealers a dick :?

its a pending law, but does get passed. You can go 51mm (in 4x4 only) larger track length (rolling diameter), which means a 265/70/17, with 111s, is just legal.

15/26mm law only applies to all other 2x4 vehicles in qld.

Have just had set of Maxxis 700 a/t tyres fitted - 4 for $1100 including balance fitting and wheel alignment. Only a few kilometres - noticeably quieter and little difference to ride. Originals travelled 50k and probably could have got a few more k's from them.

Do we know if this law was passed? i'm looking at new tyres on the ML soon and the local bridgestone dealer told me i can only legally go 25mm rolling diameter which means the 265/70/R16 @ 28mm to replace my stock 245/70/R16 are too big and said that the only option i have is to go to 255/70's.

He also quoted me $330 a corner fitted and balanced for the dueller d697 255/70/R16LT's. not sure if this is a good price or not, first quote for tyres this size and first time buying 4WD rubber

This one might be better due to after info on 33" tyres
http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=6143

or even the 33" tyre thread
http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=13331

or yet again this one

http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=5131

all of these were on the front page of the tyre section- I didn't even have to search

have some fun reading those threads, post away in one of those if you still have a question.

and they wondered in this thread why we tried to stop additional threads on tyres

not having a go on anyone - as the post was in an existing thread- so that is a start ;)
happy to help in these circumstances
