MN shocks need replacing at 27,000kms :o

Postby mjc85 on Sun Feb 06, 2011 10:56 am

I recently took my MN in to have the wheels balanced and rotated as there has been a bit of vibration of late at varying speeds. I have Coopers ST in 265/70R17. The Tyres have been on from new and the dealer said to get a balance/rotate every 10,000kms. I got a bit busy and missed the 20k rotation but finally got there at 27000kms last week. I noticed there was a fair bit of scalloping and uneven wear on the tyres. Anyways long story short the dealer said that there is no point doing a wheel alignment as my shocks are flogged out. I have noticed lately she seems to bounce around a bit excessively and the smallests of pot holes feels like a crater. The dealer said I must be carrying heavy loads, I barely ever load the vehicle with more that 200-300kgs payload and tow a trailer of about 1tonne quite regulary.

I'm due for my 30k service very soon, would the shocks be a warranty issue as I have never excessively loaded or towed more than 1 tonne?

Regards
Mitch

Normally no but I had my rears replaced just recently, under warranty, as one had started to leak - 90,000km...

Mine were not much good from new. The extra unsprung weight from the larger tyres seems to make things worse. I ended up divorcing the stock suspension as couldn't stand it anymore. For what its worth you may as well try the dealer on replacements.... But I have a feeling it will be like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day

They use screen door closers for shock absorbers as original equipment on Tritons :x . Mine hadn't done a 1000km's when I went aftermarket. A far better option for ride quality and handling.

MJC - i understand that some people do not want to spend any money on their cars (you know lease etc.)

but do yourself a favour and at least get new shocks. if you can afford it go the whole hog - you will not believe not only how much safer it will feel but just generally nicer to drive.

at least contact Ultimate to see what options you might have......only a phone call.

There are obviously other systems out there but i know someone (not active on this forum) who replaced all shocks with Bilsteins and they cost him almost $1200 (fitted) and one blew out JUST after warranty - he was not impressed.

Tough Dogs have their problems as well and they also are expensive - at least with Ultimate they support their gear - and that is not word of mouth - i have experienced it.

you do have to get it matched to get the best ride.

if someone asked me which is the ONE mod i could keep (and i have some i really like) it would be the suspension upgrade.
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

Yeah my rears are gone as well I think, takes a little too long to settle.

And I get a nice boat ride up front with the steel bar.

Ultimate will be taking care of her for me, hopefully whilst Im away for a few months on holidays. Will be nice to come back to a lifted truck  And a maxed credit card. :(

I'm glad they are wearing out this quick, I can't justify replacing suspension that is not worn out. At this rate I will have my after market suspension on in no time without feeling like I have wasted the use of the stocko ones :D

Most aftermarket shocks have Km warranty as well as time eg 12months etc

Surely the big M but have similiar warranty. 27K is nothing for a set of shocks. They are very small though and realy, well, useless IMO.
After market is the go. I've had 2 sets of Ultima shock on different vehicle and they lasted 100K each and at $200 for a pair damn good value.

My stock suspension was flogged well before 27K, it is rubbish.

I am sure when Brendan gets off his bum and logs in he will let you know mjc. :P
From personal experience with ultimate you will not be dissapointed. 8-)

One thing about Ultimate, their back up and support is fantastic. Always have been willing to help if any issues should arise. (Normally not) Also very helpful should the static weight of the truck change for various reasons.
They want happy and safe customers.

Any deasent workshop can fit it, Just need a very good quality spring compressor.
You can deal direct, give them an idea of what accessories you plan to fit (static weight of the truck). Then what load you carry and intended type of use or abuse

Sorry guys. I've been out all morning.

Generally speaking, the shock absorbers are seen as consumable items by dealerships and not covered under warranty. The original shocks are usually made to a price and don't suit everybody's application. As stated above, they are considerably smaller and have different valving/oil combinations to aftermarket equipment. This can lead to premature failure of the shocks, excessive fading, bouncy ride and fair amount of body roll.

We provide a 2 year/80,000km warranty (which ever comes last) with our shocks and do back our products pretty strongly. As GLXR-MN said, the satisfaction and safety of our customers is paramount to our business.

You can replace the rear shocks by themselves, but the biggest advantage will come from replacing the whole set as all your suspension works in diagonals.

We provide a newtriton.net discount the members and I have provided a small quote below to give you an idea.

Front Struts- 2 x $179 =$358
Rear Shocks- 2 x $135 =$270
Total- $628 = 10%
=$565.20 + $32 Freight
=$597.20

We are currently in the process of setting up a working relationship with Jonlin Automotive in Coorparoo. They have worked on a few other members vehicles and come very highly recommended. You can contact them on (07) 3394 2400
