Liqui Moly Pro-Line Diesel Intake System Cleaner

Postby arobbo67 on Sun May 04, 2014 10:44 pm

Hi, has anyone seen or tried this product (Liqui Moly Pro-Line Diesel Intake System Cleaner 400ml) for cleaning the intake manifold on their car? Its not a fuel additive, it goes into the manifold. I saw my local mechanic run some stuff through a Navara to clean the manifold last week, so I looked online for what they used and came up with a few different products, but this Liqui Moly Pro-Line Diesel Intake System Cleaner 400ml looked Ok on youtube.

From a web site selling this stuff:-

LiquiMoly Diesel Intake System Cleaner

Special active solvent with a high-tech additive combination for removing typical contamination and deposits found in the diesel intake and throttle valve areas. Dissolves and removes all greasy deposits and contaminants such as oil, resins, adhesive residues, etc. Guarantees operability of all moving parts and reduces fuel consumption. Increases the reliability of diesel-powered engines. Important: Only suitable for use in diesel engines. Recommended for preventative use during the inspection. Suitable for vehicles with EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve and DPF (diesel particulate filter).
Intended use: Removes contamination and deposits in the intake and throttle valve areas, which disrupt smooth engine running. Use of the cleaner is recommended during every inspection in order to prevent heavy deposits.

Haven't seen that one.
I used two cans of Egr4, one as soon as I got the triton, and one after I had the egr blanked and the catch-can in for a while.
that has it running pretty well, but I haven't tried to look at just how dirty it is down in there.

the problem I can see is that gunk has to go somewhere.

with the engine running the only place it can go is into the cylinders. that's not a good place for it in my opinion.

the only safe way to clean the manifold is to remove it

& then take measures to stop it re-occurring.

I agree. It must be a pretty strong solvent / alkali to loosen and dissolve the carbon. That must also wash all the oil off the bores while it's running.

The notes that go with the product recommend use during a service (inspection).I would think that means that an oil change is required after using this.

I agree an oil change would be a good idea after running that stuff through

but

whatever comes off ends up in the cylinder, there would be a real possibility it could end up under a valve or damage the cylinder wall

not something I would like to risk

Isn't there the same risk of some of the carbon build-up in the manifold breaking off and going through the motor anyway? I would imagine that a company like Liqui Moly or the other companies that provide a similar product would have done their homework before marketing, but I may be wrong.

My guess would be that it's intended for something like a minor surface clean as opposed to cleaning a system with huge big chunks and blockages. But that's only a guess.

On the video, the intake manifold looks pretty blocked, but that may just be at the entrance. They don't show inside. It would be nice for them to show inside with a bore-scope.

This might be of interest to you. These guys seem happy to pump "chemicals" into an engine.

Yeh and if a chunk of carbon comes loose finds it's way under a valve seat and puts a hole in your piston who pays for that? ... you do...
