MN How much boost is too much?

Postby jock71 on Mon Oct 15, 2012 3:30 pm

Tried doing a search but could not find what I was after. I have a 2010 MN, I have installed a new 2 1/2 -into a 3inch dump pipe and 3 inch exhaust. My ultra gauge is showing up to 25 pounds of boost now ( have not really taken much notice in past so could not say what it was before). I am not getting any alarms or trouble codes. Should I be concerned? I may need to put a muffler onto it as it is a little loud and you can hear the turbo whistle all the time now when throttle is applied. This in itself is not too much of an issue and I will see what it is like when it carbons up. Cheers Jock

25 psi is fine for short burst, I'm a little perplexed how your not getting a P1298 code though. :? If you hold it there for over eight seconds it may go limpy as most do.

I assume your seeing a boost spike to 25psi then it settles under 22psi? Very normal with a free flowing exhaust if that's the case.

I have posted on this issue in other threads, so wont go into detail here.

Cheers T

Thanks Tony, yes spiked at 25 under that normally, have seen your post with cures if getting over boost alarms but was not sure how much is too much as I am not getting any codes at this stage, so the turbo will be fine as the car will go into limp mode before any damage? Thanks for the help

They'll take over 40psi (we have done it on a test engine) , so you have nothing to worry about other than the hoses popping off.

Very robust engine. 8-)

Mine spikes at about 28 psi then will settle back to around 24-25 psi. Ecutek tuning may have something to do with that though.

No limpies, the threshold values have probably been changed a bit so less likely to throw limpies or codes.
The voices in my head may not be real, but they do have some damned good ideas.

If it's feral, it's in peril.

MN turbo lag? What lag??

Mine has been peaking at 42 psi and falling down to around 35 for over 30 000km now with no issues.
