2.8 Turbo fuel consumption ...

Postby buelllord on Sun Jul 04, 2010 11:19 pm

I drove my 2006 Triton, 2.8 turbo diesel, 4WD dual cab from Perth to Port Augusta [4,800kms] and return over Xmas. The bloody thing would do no better than 7 kilometres per litre, i am disgusted with that atrocious fuel consumption. I fitted a new aircleaner and ran the 245/70 x 16's at 38psi.

Can anybody tell me what is wrong with this thing .............

Hi buelllord welcome to the site,
Most people on this site have Tritons from ML model onwards, not the earlier MK's so it might be hard getting an answer on this.
I owned an MK before my ML but it was a 3L V6 (also terrible consumption) so I cant help you with your 2.8.
I will leave this thread unlocked and maybe someone out there just might be able to help you out............ guys?
Just a thought maybe your injectors may need a bit of TLC................ a good service?
How many K's have you got on it?

As with Buzzy, I had the MK 3L V6 but in my travels I met quite a few with the 2.8TD - from memory all returned rather shit consumption figures, more so with larger tyres or pushing past 100kph...

11-12 L per 100k. GLS (wider tyres?) with roof racks and canopy, no bar work. Didn't seem to matter what I was doing toing or not, it didn't vary much past 14l/100K.

I bought this thing at 25,000kms and now has 75,000 on it. The consumption has always been terrible, I even tipped a couple of cans of injector cleaner in it going across the Nullaboor.
A 6 litre Holden would eat this thing consumption wise and would have heaps of power as a bonus.

m8, my BIL, has complained for ages about the fuel consumption in his MK ... 2.8TD Manual, Stock Standard GLX-R ... at one stage he was telling me he was only getting about 550k's out of a tank.

12ltrs to the 100 is normal in stock form. Your getting about 14/100  A bit on the heavy side but likely if you drive it flat out all the time with a load.
Does it pull well? Or down on power and smoke like proud mary wile under full load?
So long as the engine is not worn out with bad blow by etc,

Injectors/pump stuffed.
Restricted inlet or exhaust
Turbo.... Leaking on the pressure side or on its way out.
Your driving habits

I've got a 06 MK 2.8tdi dual cab running std 265/70/16 tyres
over ~44,000 km I get the following consumption figures:
best 9.2k/l or 10.8l/100k
worst 6.8k/l or 14.6l/100k
average 8.4k/1 or 11.9l/100k

that's with everything for metro, trailer, camper, 4x4ing touring

your tyres appear to be smaller diameter that mine are, are they std? if not, have you adjusted your consumption to compensate?
