What brand oil filter are you using?

Postby furious on Sun Sep 02, 2012 4:06 pm

Hi, I am looking at changing the oil soon.

I am wondering what brand oil filter people are using?

The brand I have found are:

- The stock oil filter from mitsubishi service departments (Could be the Nippon Max?)
- Ryco
- Donaldson
- Nippon MAX

I would like your input in what oil filter i should be using.

If your still under warranty I'd use genuine and save any headaches.

Wouldn't be using non genuine even if it's out of warranty... Oil and fuel filters only use genuine .. Seen many aftermarket items cause a lot of issues

I've had 2-3 "aftermarket" oil filters compress internally and collapse on one ml and two mn tritons
And hand ful of fuel filters put filter particles thru into the fuel rail/pump/injectors etc... As you can imagine non genuine = no warranty and good luck with that.
My ml triton has 203k on it , out of warranty and wont use anything other than genuine parts for it.

What if a mitsu filter fails outside of warranty?
Will mitsu warrant any damage then?

Depends on what has caused the filter to fail. Wether it be installation or physical abuse ( tightening filter with a filter tool)

I use Sakura filters on all vehicles in my business including my trucks, uses including the triton and machines where available. I buy most of my oil by the 205l drum and filters by the box so I change them regularly. We get our oil tested every now and again just for shits and giggles and never any issues.

FYI, the oil filter on the 3.2 is a common filter size for small trucks up to around 10tonne. Reason I found out is when buying filters from our truck parts supplier I asked if they had one, and they did. So instead of paying $40+ per filter I'm paying around $15 for a decent quality filter.

Yeah I knew they were a simmilar filter to a lot of other vehicles. All I can say if vehicle is in warranty why risk loosing warranty and forking out a lot of cash to fix it over $15-20 ..
But also understand some people regularly change oil and filter in their cars. Which is a great thing.
Not saying ALL after market is bad. But read up before you choose ;)

my warranty is out so it doesnt bother me. while the price i pay for these is cheap, i wouldnt consider the quality of them cheap if that makes sense.

it would have to be a pretty shithouse filter to cause you probs though wouldnt it? it is a pretty massive filter for the size motor. its one thing i really like with the mits, large oil capacity, big filters for everything.

ill cut the next one open and post a pic for you guys to compare, but it will be in a few months time for me to rack up the required kms

I tend to use the genuine ones just for peace of mind. As the guys above have said, if it's still within warranty then it's much easier and saves any headaches if something DOES go wrong. Not saying it will, but there's always that slim chance.

TT, do you know if the oil-filter for the ML and MN are the same?

See the build up of my old Triton here.

Been using the Nippon Max all along in my ML, 135000km now with no dramas but changed every 5k. Love the drain nut on it no mess. Fair bit cheaper than Mits or Ryco. Not sure how it would go if you went the full 15k intervals but can't find any issues on net about them.

Repco filters - change every 7500K's and a total of 123,000 on my ML. Never had a problem.

I'm running genuine but in other vehicles I've used a variety of brand name filters and had oil tested with no issues. You'll find that the quality filter manufacturers will actually give you a warranty against engine damage caused by the filter.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?
