Mid Service Oil Change - 7500km

Postby griz066 on Wed Mar 16, 2011 12:48 pm

With the Triton needing to be serviced only every 15000 km do you think it should have an oil change at 7500 km or is it fine to go the full distance? Never had a brand new car before, and never had a diesel either. :?: :?:

Hi Griz
I change my oil and filter every 7500km, as I do a fair bit of off rd, stop start and towing. Think if it was an easy 15000km ie long distance travel, not towing or loaded up I wouldn't worry about it.
Just my 2 cents worth

Personally i dont do it unles it is copping a hard time IE lots of 4wd or towing, But some people do and it would only benefit the car. May get a little expensivve though with 9 litres of oil and a $40 filter every time.
If the Manufacturer thought that having oil for 15000 was an issue they wouldnt do it.

I took a mathematical approach.... the trip computer tells me that I average 50km/hr, so for 15000km, its roughly 300 engine hours, I'm comfortable with that. If you got the time & money and want to, then go ahead, it can't hurt!

I get mine done every 7500km's. I thought you had to. My old rodeo was every 5000km's. I just get oil refreshed and the filter every 15000. Mabye its overdoing it but i thought with it being diesel and turbo'd you need to keep the oil fresh.

The oil we use can sustain 15K OK in light duty, I drop mine every 7.5 due to adverse conditions but only do filter on 15K.

Yeh mate, I do it. I do a lot of little trips these days and about to do even less. I just do it for peace of mind cause I plan on having the truck for a while. It costs me about $90 to do it and its around 8mth intervals...

actually it brings up an interesting point about oil filters. i do a lot of city driving and i just got an email from dealer about this type of driving (same as towing and 4wding) requiring additional changes. it does state this in the book.

i was under the impression oil filters only filter out larger particles (metals) and would not be 'blocked' at 7500klm. However they do have the best part of one litre of dirty oil in them. but they are a dead set pain to do!!! messy

So, with approx 9 litres of total oil (3.2 litre engine) an 8 litre oil change (keeping dirty filter) at 7500klm is going to remove approximately 90% of the suspended solids in the oil for around $60 or so. The filter is a costly little item in this scenario and so you save around $50 (like to know where you get em for $40 Lee-thal)

with the futumo drain it is not too hard to drop the oil and replace without all the hassle and mess of replacing the oil filter.

what is the expert opinions on here about just doing oil at 7500 :?: . For me, 'almost' fresh oil at 7500 for around $60 is a pretty good insurance versus the extra hassle and $'s for the oil filter. i am pretty much over spending $300 for the dealer to do it though.

i rack up nearly 7500km in about 3 months so it would cost me a fortune to do oil and filter. so i might just do the oil :D

Mid Service Oil Change

Postby mattz on Wed Mar 16, 2011 5:40 pm

I will do mine every 10 k once outta warranty and oil every 5 'k It's easy to remember. Don't worry about the oil being black, it happens so quick in a diesel. I would be more worried if it was clear!

Mid Service Oil Change

I do mine every 7,500kms. I bought a Baldwin filter for about $30 from western filters but am interested to hear from DiD as to his source.

Best I found for genuine was $35 but I would have had to import 10 from OS to do that.

I paid $16 each for my filters, Purolator Premium and I am able to get Westfil ones for $25. Where do you get yours from DID?

I do my oil and filter at 7500 km . The oils price is not too bad. I use Caltex Delo 400. Buy in 20 lite drums at about $4.50 a litre, so 9 litres is about $50 which is way less than a tank of fuel.
I stick with the Mitsibishi filter whilst its under warranty.
I do a lot of heavy towing and reckon its cheap peace of mind.

I do oil and filter every 5,000kms.

Dirty oil in a diesel is bad... In the end oil and filters are cheap security and with the fumoto its just too easy, no excuse not to change it.

On filters, if your not in the trade and do a DIY filter change that fails for what ever reason there is a very slim chance of warranty OEM or after market. For the trades, after market have their own warranty if causes an issue. For this reason I strongly recommend leave the filter change for the trade or dealer. Oil on 7.5k is quite safe if you do the sump plug up and dont over fill it.

Quite a few different views. I've used Valvoline and about to use Penrite. Consult manual or that thread for details as to what grades etc.

I was wondering this same question actually..

I have owned plenty of cars, turbo, non-turbo, diesel and unleaded and to be honest I think 15,000 ks on the same oil is excessive i don't care what people say about new oils. My Triton only has 5,000 on it and the oil is already black.

Where can you get these easy oil drain valves from? Fumato ones??

I think I will change mine at 7,500
