Changing Oils (Brands)

Postby Racer on Wed Aug 19, 2009 5:53 pm

I am currently running Penrite HPR15 Diesel, this is what my mechanic WAS running. We had the Mrs's Corolla serviced today and I noticed they are now using Fuchs. I have always been a big fan of Penrite and wanted to continue to use this brand of oil. My question is, running Penrite for 7500 then running Fuchs for the next 7500, Penrite Fuchs Penrite Fuchs etc. I've never looked into Fuchs oil, is it a reputable brand, should I just convert to Fuchs?

Sorry Racer dont know anything about Fuchs, Penrite however I have used for years in my Troopcarrier that I no longer have and I swear by that stuff, I to used the HPR15 Diesel, I tried other brands one being Amsoil and nothing was as good, if it was me Id stick with Penrite. I want to put Penrite in the Triton but not sure if the dealer will do that.

Just buy the Penrite, if it is what you prefer, in bulk and take it to the dealer with your ute to use at service time.
I do this with Valvoline. I buy it in 20 litre drums and save heaps of $$$$$$$$$$$$ :D
Buying 6 Oil filters in one go will save some coin too.

I know of a lot of mines in my area that use fuchs. If they put it in their big expensive equipment, (Dump trucks, bulldozers etc.) so it cant exactly be bad. I used to use it in my other triton (2.5 TD) for about 5 years with no ill effects.

They've been around for about 120 years and their oils are "A" grade... I wouldn't hesitate to use them but it comes down to what you are comfortable with...

Fuchs is fine . I use it in common rail (perkins) tractor also bulldozer . Also heavy truck. Read there blurb pamphlet at the shop it shows they are heavily into research/development and they give a shit.

The mechanic is quite reputable and I couldn't imagine them using a poor quality oil for business. I guess it all comes down to what you like, I despise Valvoline as it didn't go to well in my old Holden...can't remember what type etc some time ago but I will never use it where some of you do.....

Maybe I should use Motorex?????? :)

I have used Fuchs in the past on my Rodeo with no adverse affects, I am using Penrite HPR5 Diesel at the moment. I buy the Penrite from a local distributor which is very conveniently located. I remember discussing Fuchs with the distributer at the time who mentioned that they are a predominantly a Blender of oils with plant here in Australia. They do specialised blends for other brands. I think with all the claims made by each of the manufacturers the only real way to determine quality would be to get the oil tested at each change interval.

Penrite HPR5 Diesel is the go, buy it in a 20ltr drum and your genuine filters 6 at a time and you save heaps.
But changing brands won't hurt, just keep the same grade of oil.

What sort of effect may it have if the oil is different between changes. Ie,7500k HPR15, 15K Fuchs, 22.5K HPR15, 30K Fuchs and so on?

As for filters I already pay $20 per filter 1 at a time

Changing brands at each service will have absolutely no effect as long as they are the same grade and meet the same specifications. The only (and it's a long shot) possibility of a problem would be if you had a suspected oil failure and testing determined that there was oil other than that from the manufacturer you were trying to make a claim on. They're both reputable brands so this is not really a likely issue.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?
