it looks good Aussie - I noticed some talk on another forum from 2004-5 that the Penrite dudes did not like the comparison shown on your website (the article from the magazine) because they said the tester didn't use their recommended viscosity oil for the vehicles tested and the results would have been different if they had followed the Penrite recommended product. I don't think the page mentioning the Penrite results is shown on your site though (I guess the outcome wasn't very complimentary to Penrite :p) The stockists for the SynForce stuff might be a bit hard to get to for some ? What's your thoughts on the HPR15 Diesel as far as run of the mill brands goes - I gather it's better than most that are 'easily' available ?

Aussie,
I can see why you wanted to keep your brand anonymous!
Let's say the secret leading brand is rated at 10 and Magna-thingy is a 5, would say 7? be about right for the HPR 15?
:? :)

penrite is an ok oil, we just wanted to build something better, there were a lot of oil companies not happy with the test, we were even threatened with being sued but when we pointed out the tests were not done/published or had anything to do with us they backed off.

we have upset a few oil companies and that is why i am hesitant even about commenting on their products, there are some however that i would love to slam as i believe they should not be making the claims that they do, but i have to be very careful as i am sure you will understand.

having said all that i believe what i have said to date is not focused on promoting our brand, it has been and is all industry standard.

cheers

What do you think about the Castrol RX New Gen Diesel 15w40? I just had it put in my truck and at least the engine is quitter now, just like new.

First bit copied from another heading but should have been here.
Just changed my oil and wish I had changed it when it was new and not now at 7,500km.
Filthy slop, especially the bit that drained out of the filter which was very thick and black. Since new the oil light has gone out a couple of secs after it starts, now it goes out before it starts, when it's cranking.
You have to wonder what oil they use in the new motors and what state it would have been in after 15,000km or 20,000km in Europe?
Long winded job when you have to remove the rear bash plate, turbo inlet hose, air cleaner top half and the small actuator hose, to get at everything and the Super Cheap plastic oil draining container only just holds the 7L+.
How could you let it go to 15,000km and then have the dealer fill it with more cheap slop?

i just booked in my car for 15k and told them i will be bringing my own oil for them to use.

He said "no problems" and he confirmed they use Castrol Magnatec.

Lander Mitsibishi in blacktown.
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

Not sure I could trust them to use the Nulon instead of knocking it off and squirting more Magnacrap in there?
You should have about 1L left from 10L maybe more if they rush the drain.

if you cant trust someone to do that then we may all as well give up.

Rang up the Toyota dealer that just serviced the Corolla[new shape] I sold to my ex and they used Magnatec 10W/40.
Interesting because I'm sure it calls for 5W/30 but it's in Kal at the moment. Perhaps they're trying to fixthe oil consumption problem with the low friction piston rings?
Anyway, it will get something better in May and they will knock the cost off the 4.2L of Magnacrap off the fixed $120 service cost which will be interesting. Hopefully Aussie will specify the best grade for the 2ZR-FE engine in something like Synforce for example and hopefully it will do the 10,000km between oil changes without being topped up?

Strange how I trust them to use the supplied oil on her car?

for the 3.2 diesel buy a 15w/40 semi synthetic, medium ash (1.3% to 1.5%), Ch4/sj, JASO Dh1 with a TBN (total base No) greater than say 10 (preferably up around 11 or so) in a reputable brand, these specs will set you on the right track.

I don't think Aussie wants to comment on specific brands considering his position. But he has posted up some spec for a guide, and it looks like the caltex meets or exceeds doesn't it.

I'm totally confused now, I rang my dealer to ask what oil to use to match what they use at the 15k services, they said Mobil 5w30 ESP low ash for the 3.2 ML Triton, I'm in Queensland not Moscow.
Help me.

I reckon you're spot on with your thinking on that one. Maybe give them another ring but I think most use Castrol magnastuff for the Triton :(

Hi all, Synforce has updated it's website so a lot of the old page names will no longer work, best go to the main front page and go from there, cheers

Very similar spec to Penrite HPR15. Got my 4 x 5L for $100 but it's normally about $40 more. Can't beat $74!!!!
The biggest difference is when it gets hot and the viscosity falls to 15.7 at 100C and the Penrite still has 20.1
Guess that's the 15/50 bit? but it's flowing better at 40C with 125 as against Penrite's thicker 150. Viscosity index has the Penrite quite a bit higher too but that might be a bad thing, especially cold?
Might change to a lighter oil in Tasmania?
Penrite specs in brackets.

SAE Grade 15W-40 [15W-50]
Density at 15°C, kg/L 0.886 [0.872]
Base No., D2896, mg KOH/g 9.6 [9.4]
Sulfated Ash, %m 1.0 [1.22]
Viscosity, cSt at 40°C 125 [150]
Viscosity, cst at 100°C 15.7 [20.1]
Viscosity Index 131 [155]
Zinc, %m 0.13 [0.122]
