Free Flow Filter Availabile?

Hi people. Quick query. I've been searching for a direct replacement free flow air filter for my triton for some time, but here in SA the big names like K&N and BMC don't stock any for a ML2.5did. Many have also advised me against it, as the common view is that these cotton gauze things dont stop fine dust going into the engine - which is a valid point. But I dont go off road much. I've seen some of you guys in Oz use something called a unifilter. Have any suggestions of where I can order it from - or any better alternatives

Western filters. They have their own website or they also sell on eBay. They are a good reliable vendor.

You might want to search on unifilter in the forum before you buy - there's been a few exchanges in the past about the relative merits of each.

Honestly justnow my best mate works next door to them and that is how I get the items so cheap.
The best bet would be straight off the net. When I get the item from them I only am getting a few bucks(give or take and depends on the item)(a prefilter I just got they knocked $8 off the Ebay price)
In saying this iu will see what I can do though??

Hey guys. Being doing some investigating. The unifilter is made of foam, with others like the K&N filter is made of woven cotton gauze. Whats the diff I managed to find one here is SA - its a K&N flat panel filter, but the retailer wants a whopping 900 SA rands for it - dont know how much that currently converts into aus$, buts its a lot in any currency. Brings me to the second question - is it worth it? A friend who has it fitted to his toyota D4D says the throttle response is better and it does make a viable difference on turbo vehicles, but I just don't know. Yes, I've read all the promo stuff on all the websites that says fantastic things - but real world facts from people who actually use them?

I noticed a difference with mine, the engine just breathes more freely. Like a smoker after they've quit for a while, or maybe smoking a rolly compared to one with a filter on it.

But if you're doing lots of dust the consensus seems to be that the unifilter might be safer. Have you checked ebay for someone who will post to SA?

I bought a Unifilter for a 2.7T.D Nissan (oil type filter)
AND then had to buy a new airflow meter
Airflow meter from Nissan $975.00
Airflow meter from Bosch $425.00
Airflow meter had both part # stamped on it
Cost of airflow meter +Unifilter +spare outer EQUALS at least 8 YRS of filter replacements
BEWARE if fitting to a tubo diesel

i had a K&N on my 100series and it let some dust pass through at it had been oiled but you have to worry when you see day light through it


i stick to the good old paper filters

Just some feedback chaps. Ordered a K&N filter directly from the good ol' US of A, at a price of $50. Inclusive of shipping and a 10% customs levy, it still worked out cheaper than half of what our local rippin' merchants are peddling them for here in africa south. It came pre-oiled, and I held it up to the sun to see if daylight could pass thru (tip I learnt from somewhere..hehe ). Seemed fine and looked very well made. Installed it in the van and WOW, what a difference! There's no extra power to be had, but the way the thing revs now, it just is really noticeable. Still won't take it offroad though, thanks to all of you guy's sound advice. Will change it back to the original denso filter if planning dust roading. But the other 90% of the time, the K&N stays .

I did Cape York (heaps of dust) in a brand new Triton with a Unifilter and had no problems with dust at all and it's still going strong and Im still using the Unifilter.
