MN GLX Double Cab (Diesel / Manual)

Postby destorman on Fri Jun 25, 2010 10:50 am

Hi all ... first, let me say we will not be doing any major mod's like many on here ... but, for the interest of other users who may be looking at a Triton and or have one and use it in a more passive way like we do, I thought I would start this thread and keep it updated as things progress ...

Use is for beach work mainly for surfing, fishing and camping ... towing a 12 ft tinnie and getting away camping on rough / unsealed roads into coastal national parks.

Decision to buy a Triton Double Cab GLX (Diesel / Manual) was impacted around:
- stylish looks (we like the style and less square shape of others in the class)
- price (value for money compared to others in the class)
- GLX at $33k was hard to go past
- GLX simple interior means easy cleaning with sand etc
- GLX with less electronics is less to go wrong
- Option to add canopy later, etc without having to throw away accessories that may come with it
- Ability to pick up some accessories at reasonable prices

So, what we plan to do is:
- add some flat style allow (factory) side steps (pick up on Sunday for $200 ... now installed)
- add a nudge bar (pick up on Sunday for $150... installed now)
- add some roof racks (done ... pro rack in silver / black for $265)
- add electronic rust protection system (quoted $350 installed)
- tint the windows (quoted $300 installed)
- add a tow bar (done ... mitsi 'no step' style with full wiring harness for $585)
- front seat spacers (ordered ... $95)
- number plate covers (done ... kingpin pinstripe type for $29)

I'll get some photo's soon and update as things progress.

Initial thoughts since owing is the engine is nice and smooth, plenty of torque but rev's and gearing around the 50 km/h mark did not seem right until I worked back (see other thread about this) and if the speedo is out by 5 km/h that will pretty much be all it needs to get revs up enough to hold 4th gear with no 'strain / load' sound and feeling.

Ride for a GLX is as expected being a bit harsher over the bumps.

As I drove it more I will update ...

Added Pro Rack roof racks this afternoon and some number plate covers.

Ended up choosing the Pro Rack roof racks as they silver with black ends ... a style and colour thing to enhance the Triton. Have always had Rola Racks and was heading that way but they could only give me all black and the silver / black combo we though was a better option.

RRP was $329 and with the 20% off sale this weekend at Autobarn we paid $265 or thereabouts.

Went with the Kingpin number plat covers as they have the screw in fitting so a neater and more secure fixing.

Total install time ... 3 stubbies ... 2 for the roof racks and one for the plate covers ... plus the obligatory couple afterward standing back looking at the enhancements.

Yesterday we sourced a Mitsubishi geniune towbar (no rear step) with their wiring harness ... and we installed
that yesterday afternoon.

We picked up the Nudgebar and Sidesteps today and they've now been added ...

Couple of pic's added to our shed.

Yeah ... all fitted no worries Ben. The 'missing' nut for the nudge bar was not actually missing at all ... did not need it. 3 x bolts screw into pre drilled and welded nuts on the chassis and the last one needs a nut and bold combo so, all good.

Great deal m8, I'm happy and my daughter is stoked being able to climb up now all by herself.

See you on a beach somewhere ...

Just letting everyone know, I am editing the first post on this thread as things are being completed and added costs so it may help others who look at it later ...

Also, we have completed about 680kms so far in a combo of highway and around town driving and we are VERY happy with the ride (much softer and smoother than we thought given its a base model GLX) and the fuel economy seems fantastic ATM ... at the 1/2 tank mark we had done 440km and now at the 1/3 mark with the 680km.

Cruise control is really easy to use and one of the best we have used for simplicity ... set about 5km about speedo reading is a trick and the diesel just hums along ... VERY quite and enjoyable.

Driving around Brisbane on some of the older narrow 2 lane streets and it was a breeze ... gr8 visibility. Took a while to get use to the distance in the mirrors though but seem to have that down pat now.

Bit of super soft sand use also and it just ate it up without any deflation if the tyres (totally empty though).

So far so good ...

Also, for what its worth, when we installed the tow bar wiring harness we had to disconnect the battery but the stealer had not given us a radio code ... called the stealer and sale dude and it was the usually "have to wait until Monday for the service dept" so we called Mitsubishi helpline ... FANTASTIC service, gave them some details, did the id check and radio code given over the phone at 5pm on Saturday afternoon.

just filled up ... 61.54 litres for 760 kms travelled, so if my calc's are correct that is 8.01 litres per 100 km!

VERY happy with that ... driving was mostly (80%) highway and a lot of that was at 110 km/h. Triton is stock standard with no load, weight added etc ...

Also, that 61.54 litres was to the top of the tank, not just diesel foam, but liquid, right to the top and I know that the last tank was exactly the same as I wanted a proper calculation and comparison.

Km's are as per the odometer, but tyres and wheels are standard so I would assume the odometer is spot on, although I will be checking with my GPS on day soon.

Also, for interest sake, I noted Diesel was 5 cpl more expensive than unleaded ... our old car was getting around 12 litres per 100 km, so for the same distance (760km) it would have needed 91.2 litres, which would have cost $115.74 (unleaded was 126.9 per litre) while the Diesel only cost $81.17 (it was 131.9 per litre) so while the diesel was more expensive the overall saving due to the fuel economy is $34.57.

Gotta love this new Triton!

Been in softer, sure ... it was a beach access track that the pro's had used overnight and had chopped up pulling boats up etc ... and agreed, would normally be down at 15 psi too.

Hi Destorman

I'm enjoying your reviews and build up.

I've just picked up a new MN GLX dual cab manual as well and are starting to gear it up. :D

I'm planning on a future trip to Cape York and am concerned with the Big Bum overhang and not sure whether to add a rear bar or just go the towbar - The ARB rear bars add something like 250 - 300mm to the length of the vehicle which isn't a good thing.
I've seen some pics of your towbar - and chance of a pic showing the the outside of the rear guard to the middle of the towbar - taben from the rear ??
Also can I assume that the factory towbar are pretty easy to fit yourself ??

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Darryl ... I actually have some pic's of the install of the tow bar when I did it myself, and some other angles of it installed ... I'll get then up in the next couple of days.

Couple of pic's and info about the tow bar install here:

I've lost a couple of pic's of the rear and tow bar as you asked for Darryl so I'll take a couple more today and post 'em up tonight ...

We got our seat spacers in the post yesterday (thanks DiD3.2) and put them in yesterday afternoon ... has made the seats a lot better.

I have noticed I needed to move the seat one notch forward to feel 'comfortable' reaching the clutch.

Really feels like you are sitting back into the seat now and have some support under the tops of your legs. Have a trip with some distance coming up so look forward to feeling the difference.
