triton front recovery points

Postby dinos4x4 on Sun Mar 17, 2013 6:34 pm

I have fitted my new recovery points from Ultimate 4wd Accessories here in Perth.

Very happy with the result

Fitting is very fiddly, they pick up one original hole and 2 new one have to be drilled in the chassis
The nuts are welded to some steel flat bar and they are fed down into the chassis with flexible wire so you can line them up with the 12mm high tensile bolts.

here are some pics

How long did they take to install, and what equipment did you need remove for the install

Sign me up!!!!! I have always worried about the strength of the "Tie down points". They may not be load rated but any boffin could tell they would be much stronger then the factory points. Plus and this is important.... They are Shinney :D :D :D :D

Maybe (...probably...) a silly question ... but is it ok to be drilling holes in the chassis ? I know it's at the very end of the rail and would not structurally affect it but just wondering more on legalities of it ?

I like 'em ;)

I agree with you, I understood that chassis rails should never be drilled or welded as it changes the structural integrity of them. Maybe be wrong.

And when you mount some of their load rated recovery points for other vehicles.

As I said I maybe wrong. I do know the best way to reduce a crack in a structural member is to drill a hole at the end of the crack. This helps to prevent it growing any further.

Depends where the hole is and what size...

The do not drill / weld chassis is typically for large trucks, not as much of a concern with our chassis, but still it shouldnt be taken lightly.

Drilling the front frame horns for these points should be fine. This part of the chassis is only a carrier and not much stress is placed on it.

I would like to see crush tubes with bolting through the rail though. Are they included? Or do they only bolt through one wall of the rail?

From what I understand, they only bolt through one wall as the nut have some type of mechanism to stop them from turning during installation.

usually these type of things have a bar with captive nuts (welded nuts) with a wire to help you line up the bolts

I have used this system when installing a towbar to a previous vehicle, however only through existing factory holes in the chassis rails.

Yes you only drill through one wall of the chassis, the nuts are welded to steel flat bar to stop them spinning around when u tighten the bolts.
