Possible future 're call'

Postby Firecat on Wed May 29, 2013 4:06 pm

555 k's and I walk out the gate and oh dear....WTF is that ??
Oil all or so I think on the drive way...."Can't be from my old Discovery as I water blasted all that evidence away".
Have a look underneath and wow that looks like a rear main leaking..
"Hello service dept"... ASAP back here Stevie boy.

'Verdict'....# (1) Injector seal has popped out.
Not oil but diesel....engine bay soaked in it.

Seems at my dealer this is the second 2013 2.5ltr in a couple of weeks that has spat this seal.
All plenum and top seals must come off to refit a new seal .
"Appears to be a 'robotic' problem on assembly not seating/bedding down the seal during assembly causing the problem".

Assured that only # (1) suffers this defect and once attended to it doesn't fail again...."Bit daunting but the dealer is onto it as I type"

It has been happening a bit, lately. You aint the first to post here about it in the last few weeks...

Sounds like MMAL are onto it, anyway. Hopefully that robot, on injector 1, got a talking to.

OK.. Car sorted and repaired this morning.

Maybe a "'Safety Re Call '" looming as this problem stinks of potential 'safety hazard'.

(1) An environmental hazard with fuel spills.

(2) A potential 'slipping' hazard with fuel inadvertently dumped on both Public and Private 'parking areas'.

(3) A significant 'Fire and or Explosion' hazard due to 'high pressure diesel misting' of the engine bay.

"Now the last might sound extreme but given the right amount of 'heat and air, even with out an actual 'flash' ignition source 'diesel' can ignite with lethal potential..."Just look at the Mining sector Explosives' '..."not to mention the tried and true addition of Ammo-nitrates and Fertilizer ".

'Be aware'

Regards Steve.

ITs not diesel that would have been leaking, it would have been oil,

we have seen it a couple of times and i can assure you 100% its oil,

If you pop an injector oil seal and get a mist of diesel, that's a separate problem! The injector pipe its self.

The injector pipe does not have such called seals.

These seals you mention are often coming out and from what I have seen, fitting provents or catch cans seems to make it more prevalent too.

I think the 2.5 may have a bit more possitve pressure in the crank case as cylinder combustion pressures are marginally higher than 4M41. (Blow by)

The robot on the assembly line sure needs a re learn to allow for the above.
