Can adapter - what does it do?

Postby subi_man on Mon May 11, 2009 2:59 pm

Getting ready to install my CarPC and up behind the Multi-function display is a small CAN ADAPTER box, independant of the display. Does anyone know what it does, and does it need to be retained? (the QR code only gives a really really long part no.}

I had the same dilemma but left it there as room was available behind the screen. No idea what it does. :?:
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

My guess is that is something to do with getting fuel/speed data from the ECU...

Not sure though if it is independent of the displey... :?:

I left mine there when I repositioned my MFD...

yeah wasn't sure if it was actually independant, but made that assumption based on the way it was clipped to the MFD mounting bracket

haha thought about doing this too, but am recovering from a knee operation and didn't fancy a walk back if the engine conked out before I got home

Nothing exciting mate - damaged some cartilage when I dislocated my knee in a pipe trench a few months ago, needed arthroscopic surgery to fix  could have been worse, at least it wasn't a total reconstruction but it's still a PITA :?

Nifty yes, apart from those with carPC screens in there check out gowie's shed with an Alpine double DIN unit installed (not sure how easy a job it was though!)

Cheers

Nifty, it gets a bit cramped for room with various pipes and wiring etc so will protude slightly out of the dash. A 7" touch screen connected to a PC looks factory though. 8-) Please bear in mind I'm slightly biased though.

I put one in mine. just needs a little cutting and your there. looks good too. BTW "CAN" is also a type of computer interface protocol. Maybe thats what it is. an adaptor between the screen and the engines dianostics.

Agree with everone, CAN bus adapter for the readout on the display. Would be a useful thing to keep if you needed to interigate the CAN bus for other data.

digging up an old post here, but has anyone got one of these CAN adapters sitting around unused?

the MMCS has 2 empty wires on the back of it that get connected to the CAN Bus in other models and I am wondering if this adapter could be the missing link.

CAN, an abbreviation for Controller Area Network, is an ISO-certified international standard for a serial multiplex communication protocol*1. A communication circuit employing the CAN protocol connects each ECU, and sensor data can be shared among, which enables more reduction in wiring.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CAN offers the following advantages.

Transmission rates are much faster than those in conventional communication (up to 1 Mbps*2), allowing much more data to be sent.

It is exceptionally immune to noise, and the data obtained from each error detection device is more reliable.

Each ECU connected via the CAN communicates independently, therefore if the ECU enters damaged mode, communications can be continued in some cases.
