Low beam off when hi beam on?

Low beam off when hi beam on?

Postby Newcabby on Mon Nov 13, 2017 11:35 am

Hey folks, I have a 2017 cab chassis 2.4 petrol.
When I flick the hi beam on the low beam goes out? Is this normal? Can I fix it?
Cheers

Normal operation for 99% of vehicles

The bulbs in those lights have two filaments, but are only designed for one to operate at once (except for brief operation when flashing). If you were to operate both filaments together the heat would cause bulb failure within a very short space of time.

If you want more light then buy better quality, not higher wattage, bulbs.

Phillips Extreme Vision Plus 130 Halogen globes (3700k) work much better than the stock globes, the pattern is correct (unlike LED light conversions), they're ADR approved (unlike aftermarket HID and LED) and they're only $99 per pair at Supercheap Auto.

No you won't fry the road in front of you but the light will extend about further down the road on high beam and low beam will be brighter and clearer. They lighting has a less yellow look, more yellow/white than the pure yellow of normal 3200k halogens but not pure white like LEDs or HIDs.

Best cheap mod I have done and easy to fit.

$99! :o :o :o

At the moment the Osram bulbs are as good, if not better than the Philips.

How about $27.95USD, plus some freight on Amazon?

You may have to shop around a bit to find the best freight deals, fulfilment by Amazon is usually the best.

It's a crap solution though. Keeping low beams on with highs, such as the Challenger does, results in overlighting the foreground while the highs are not necessarily able to fill the low beam voids properly, nor are they capable of increasing intensity further out to compensate for the overlit foreground.

It's like people who drive around with their fog lights on and proclaim that they can see better. They can't.

Most newer vehicles are using a bi-halogen, bi-xenon or bi-led projector simply because by opening up the light blocked by the low beam shield the relative intensities change and you can actually see better. In many cases this is so effective that a separate high beam pocket is no longer necessary. The MQ is just one example of this although the limitation to 2000 lumen light sources (to save the cost of levelling and washers) means that they're not the brightest of lights.

Please explain what is levelling and washers?

p.s.
Excuse me I answered my own question by using the search panel

I can understand the requirement of having auto levelling but why wiper wash though?

Any build up on the lens increases the likelihood of glare. Washers help to reduce this.
