turbo to intercooler hose split

Postby puk on Mon Jan 06, 2014 6:44 am

the hose from the turbo to the intercooler had torn beside the hose clamp, i noticed this because oil was spraying out back onto the body of the turbo.
I was able to cut off the torn section, and still had enough left for it to hold on, with two opposing hose clamps, but it is starting to slip back and i dont know if it will last.

The stealership tells me that the hose is $192 to replace, which is criminal as far as i am concerned.
Now the hose has two formed kinks in it, but would a straight hose of the same diameter work there instead, at a fraction of the price? It looks like a fairly straight line from turbo to intercooler.

If you can get a hose to fit that is suited for turbo applications (can handle the PSI) then it would work fine.

Just get some turbo smart hose or similar from autobarn or stores like that. Truck supply places normally sell metre lengths for around $50 for black cooler hose.

Just had the same hose replaced by the dealer, under warranty, as mine split as well.
They wanted to charge me $250 for the hose and another $150 for labour. about $394 all up inclusive.

That's just insane. If it was handcut from a solid piece of rubber by a bloke with a potato peeler maybe but for a mass produced bit of hose? FFS.

Mandrel Bent bit of Stainless with 2 different hose clamps for the ends would work - and probably last a lot longer too.

Yup, the factory stuff is a moulded hose so won't get hose to sit straight in. Find some bends, get the ends rolled so there is a head for the clamp to hold and buy a meter of that blue hose from autoricebarn or any auto shop

So what do people do when this happens? Pay the arm and a leg for the genuine part, chase around wreckers to find one before everybody else does, or does anyone actually have aftermarket hose in theirs with a reducer that has worked for them?

can any one confirm what size t bolt type hose clamps would be required for the turbo to cooler pipe are??. I don't really trust the stock clamps especially if they have been undone/done up a few times ..

How does that work when the ends are two different sizes?

I imagined he meant pipe with a bit of hose each end for the joining. Still a bit of stuffing around but not impossible. Pretty sure geek has a setup something like that but that was because he has a different turbo from memory.

I see.
One dealer wanted $192 for it,
another I rang, where I get my little Ford serviced as well, wanted $92.
So I am going to go the easy option and just get it from them.

Get the part number and buy though these guys http://www.amayama.com/ It will take a couple of weeks to arrive but will save you hundreds. I got the intercooler intake pipe for my last car. Nissan wanted $600. I paid $69. It's all genuine parts. They just import directly from Japan so you don't get robber by the Stealer.

You can get reducer bits of pipe. Have done for plenty of turbo applications where IC piping is smaller than throttle body or turbo outlets :)

I looking at throwing a Chinese eBay cooler on at some point and will do exactly as I've mentioned

I am picking up the replacement pipe on monday.
But today the old one slipped off, and i got a CEL.
I stopped, put it back on and continued the trip, and its all okay for now. But what i was wondering was: How do i clear the CEL?

Do i have to take it to a dealership?

Some of them will go away on their own. Some will go away if you disconnect the battery for a while. If it's still there after that then you would need an obd reader like a scangauge. Or you can get some that will talk to your phone and use that to clear the code

Yeah well. With all the problems I have had with the ute lately, I wasn't going to cop that at all. Made a great fuss in the service department and the service manager said he was going to cover it at no cost.
Think they were just trying it on :(
Now out of warranty and it is never going back to Mitsubishi unless its a driveline issue on the 10y 160,000km side

Two hose clamps undone and retightened with the new hose and they want $150.00?

That's farking ridiculous. Talk about gouging....

Well, they ordered the wrong part, looks like it will be costing me $192.
I should have done like MilkmanDan said and bought the stainless pipe and hose ends.

Not that easy with bulbar, winch, driving lights, 2 off Aerials etc

Still not worth $150 though
