Looking to buy a 2007ish Triton

Postby BlackDogCustoms on Mon Jul 28, 2014 11:29 am

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to buy a Triton around 2007 with less than 150,000Km I was keen to get a GLXR. But have recently seen there is a VR and a VR Plus.

My understanding is the difference between the GLX-R and VR is only the blue tooth, and the Nudge Bar, Roll Bar and Hard cover are not included in the VR. Since I was going to add a canopy and ARB winch bar this seems viable.

Is my information correct? Does anyone know what the VR Plus gets extra?

The other question I have is on getting a reversing camera, can the current model GPS/Reversing cameras etc bet retro fitted into older models?? Or do you have to have a stuck on aftermarket type. I'd prefer it to look factory.

Thanks

The VR was a good compromise until MY2009 from memory. Essentially a GLX-R without what you have outlined. You missed one though. GLX-R embroidered floor mats. ;) MY09 VR was specced down closer to GLX I think as the VR was too popular with those adding canopies and barwork. If coin allows, an MY09 GLX-R is probably the pick of the tritons over the last 8 years. Super-select 4WD is a great option.

I bought an MY08 VR initially as I was adding a canopy and barwork. Managed to find a genuine Bluetooth on Ebay for $75 so saved over $2K from a GLX-R. 8-) This was written off recently and have since bought a second hand MY09 GLX-R. Need to do the canopy thing again  and will have to somehow get rid of the cover and rollbar but it is a better car than the MY08 purely for super select. Finding the RDL button during the test drive was also a welcome bonus. 8-)
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

Yes, the VR was a downgraded GLX-R, minus hard cover, nudge bar, bluetooth and the crappy leather covers on steering wheel and gear knobs.

VR Plus? Maybe a dealers special or very short run?

The cost of retrofitting the MMCS would not be worth it, given that it has some limitations. You can get aftermarket units that will replace the blue screen and give you more than the MMCS, plus bluetooth that works better. There's a pic in my Shed that will give you an idea of what can be done.

The 07 VR still had the crappy leather covers but might not have had the fancy pedals. The covers were deleted 09.

Never heard of this one

Must have been MY08, Greedy. Mine didn't have the leather, or the slippery alloy pedals. Forgot about the tweeters too - another delete on the VR. Didn't make much difference, the sound system was pretty crap back then.

No, I haven't heard of the VR Plus either.

You are right, though, the MY09 is the pick of any Triton made thus far. But, Super Select was only in the GLX-R.

As an mmcs owner I would echo Chris' comments above. Having said that if you wanted to buy a 2009 model you're welcome to mine... As for factory look at the rear end there's no such thing as far as I know. The lancers came with a clarion camera and a colour matched plastic shroud but I've never seen that on a triton. A little butterfly camera mounted above the number plate is invisible unless you get down low and look upwards.

NowForThe5th, NowForThe5th,

That looks good mate. It looks stock. I hate things stuck on all over the dash, GPS, Screens, Phones etc. they just look messy. Are you happy with your rear step???

What model and where did you get it.

I've already stretched the budget out from $15k to max $20K and hoping to find a few add ons inc in that. Don't know if I can find a decent MY09 GLX-R for that budget, not a beat up ex tradie.

ARB canopy, window opens outward on left side, sliding window right side, sliding window at front of canopy plus Two 12volt outlets at rear one right side and one left side, supplied from auxillary battery.
ARB Canopy roof rack rated at 100kg carrying capacity.
This is an 07 VR but sounds like it has a lot of value in aftermarket kit.

ARB rear step/ bumper/ tow bar rated at 2300kg towing and 230kg ball weight.
ARB bullbar complete with electric winch (never used apart from testing when installed).
Old Man Emu shockers and springs.
Pirana dual battery system wired to rear accessory sockets
Electrical connection via 12 pin flat plug accepts 7 pin flat plug for trailer.
Tekonsha electric trailer brake controller, suitable for up to 4 axles.
Rear view camera rego plate mount, and wiring for second camera on towed vehicle, caravan/ trailer etc.
Uniden remote head 2 way 40 channel wide band UHF radio wired to auxillary battery so stays on when ignition is off.
Long range fuel tank 135ltr is a replacement for the original 75ltr tank.
Car has not done any hard 4 wheel driving. Has towed camper trailer to many fantastic campsites and our poptop on our tour up the middle and down the west. It performed well with no problems at all. It has never missed a service and has been treated with respect.

Now you've opened another argument altogether. Petrol vs diesel. Popcorn anyone? 5th already here; Homer should be along shortly and no doubt Salt will have a say.

   Mine was a V6 and even though I now have a diesel, I'd still go for the petrol, given a choice. For others the diesel suits better if doing higher kilometres, but (and I know Homer will agree :P ) the V6 auto is a very good combination, maybe the best if doing any sand work.

BDC, that's a lot of extra gear on that MY07. 100K is not a problem on the V6, provided it's had timing belt and plugs done, you'll go for another 100K with no more than oil and filters (they are cheap to service ;) )

My step was Ironman but now sold by MCC - almost the same as ARB which is on that Triton anyway.

There's an extensive thread on the Dig_Options double DIN unit which is what I ended up with. Very few complaints and I bought another for the new one. :D Don't worry about CD's. It's an MN.

Doesn't the petrol have lower tow rating?

Nope. 4x2 was 1800kg, V6 and 3.2 were 2300kg. Later upgraded, of course.

 That was one small batch of MY08s, Snowie, which happened to include Homer's, but not mine made in the same month. Not MY07s.

The ad said 1800 kg for towing but then the bar was rated higher.
