Hot Gearbox issue???

Postby brad350 on Sun Mar 18, 2018 9:16 am

I know how you guys get angry when people don't the search function (not that thats a bad thing) but i'm not even sure what to search for.

My gearbox gets hot enough that i can't even rest my leg against the tunnel. I have been to my local gearbox guy twice and he says there is nothing wrong with it both times. I have been to Mitsubishi and they say something about the gearbox gets hot because of the bull bar and you just have to deal with it. When i go up long hills it gets stuck in second gear and stays like that till i either put it in neutral or stop the engine.

If others have come across this same issue would you be nice enough to point me in the right direction of either a thread or solution coz it's driving me nuts. I don't tow anything and its a MN 2013 model 5 speed Auto.

ARB does a larger auto trans cooler, you may want to investigate why the gearbox is getting hot and if no mechanical issue fit a larger trans cooler.

There's bugger all insulation around the floor and tunnels, so if you haven't got a lot of airflow going through the engine bay, the heat will build up.

If I had an auto, I'd consider putting a motorbike radiator fan on the tranny cooler or fit a couple of coolers at the lower grills.

Don't rule out that a lot of the heat at the tunnel is from the engine, esp. exhaust, turbo, etc.

As advised above the exhaust runs along that side of the tunnel and heat could be radiating up to the tunnel

I'd be fitting a decent trans cooler, regardless.

Heat wrap around the dump pipe and the leading part of the exhaust drops the cabin temp significantly!

How steep is the bloody hill you are pulling and what speed and more importantly what rpm are you doing for it to be in 2nd gear, I would be getting an Auto trans specialist to take it for a drive and hopefully duplicate the issues you are having, you said you have been to a gearbox bloke twice.
Give GERRY WUBBLES AUTOMATICS in Gateshead ( Newcastle ) a buzz and ask to speak to one of the boys, very good info over the phone and rattle their brain on the issue, explain to them you live a couple of hours up the road.

Together with the heat issues, pulling a hill in 2nd gear, points to like you might be really getting into it ;)

Common problem , mostly while towing, first option is a good additional trans cooler

I have a 2011 MN 5sp manual but just the same, going uphill she gets warm alright, great in winter. As mentioned before these vehicles are pretty basic in some respects and there isn't a lot of heat shielding involved. Same with the cabin noise, not much sound dampening materials in the firewall / engine bay. At first it worried me but now it's all part of the acceptance.

Yup, 2011 MN 2.5TD auto and 2nd gear sticking when towing camper up hills. Only happens up big hills when she struggles down to 50-60 km/h. Is the trans cooler the one on the bottom right of grill in front of radiator? I'd like a fan in there if this issue is common. The exhaust wrap sounds like good idea too, especially in long, dry grass during summer.

I've been thinking about whether driving a Triton has caused my Tinnitus.

Always use earmuffs &/or plugs when exposed to noise work, etc. (except when driving)

It seems any but the high end models in the Jap dual cabs are essentially a steel box with a splat of sound deadener here are there, piece of poly rag on the floor and a poor excuse of insulation over the head liner.

There’s no sound deadener in these things....

Dynamat the tunnel will also help with the heat

This. First. Relatively cheap and easy to do and so effective that you may not even need to worry about the other solutions offered above.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

I didn't know that will give it a try.
