Removal of blanks in the centre dashboard

Removal of blanks in the centre dashboard

Postby RG76 on Sat Jun 04, 2016 9:43 am

Can anyone offer any hints as to how to remove the switch blanks in the centre of the dashboard next to the cigarette lighter? I want to put some switches in there but wouldn't have a clue how to get them out? Cheers.

There is a thread on how to remove the centre console and radio section. Have a read and see how you go, just don't force anything

You have to dismantle part of the dash to get them out as they are secured from the inside

What a PITA, I did read that post but it refered to GLX which is different to my GLS. Looks like I'm pulling the dash apart tomorrow :o

Drop the glove box down by squeezing both sides in. You can than reach the 2 blanks closest to the passenger side. They are just held in by clips.

you can pry the larger square blank out and the stick your fingers through the hole to pop the smaller ones out

Word of warning though the switches and holes are different sizes. You can try and cut into the blanks but is pretty damn hard to get right. I ended up buying a hollow blank but still needed to make the holes bigger to accept that then the switches

Air on board make factory style switches for the blanks. Find them on ebay for around $30 each

Was thinking the same thing a few weeks ago - I bought a set of trim temoval tools for about $25. Seemed a bit pricey for a few little plastic hooks and levers. But having the right tools really does make it an easy job. Got those switch blanks out in about 5 seconds!

Btw, the clips are in the centre at the top and bottom. Push something in about 15mm and then inwards to release it.

Is there a trick to getting the glove box back in? Just did the above mod to install some switches ect and having trouble getting the glove box back in. Trying not to get frustrated and break anything.

Put the left side ( closest to door ) in first.. the right side needs a bit of a squeeze to put it back..

How do you remove the fascia surrounding the cig lighter and blank switches?

I've dropped the glovebox out, but the fascia seems somehow clipped to the glovebox mount

It's nothing like I've seen / felt before. It's like it's got some tongue that needs to be unclipped somehow

Same goes for the bottom panels running along the glovebox. Some new clip system

My handholding quota for today has already been used up.

Start here, Section 52A, Interior.
