MQ Getting wires behind back seat.

MQ Getting wires behind back seat.

Postby Giovanni on Fri Oct 27, 2017 8:01 am

Hi all,

Here I have a 2017 D/C MQ with tub.
Has anyone fitted a aux. battery and or remoted CB/HAM radios behind the back set i.e. where the jack etc are stored.
How did you route the cables, coax into that area?
I note there are cabin vents on the rear side panels, maybe through there and out under the cab?

cheers from across the ditch

*Following this post with interest*

I'd like to do the same thing myself (sorry no help here).

Also interested. Which batteries people used for sizing etc? Or would a battery box fit.

When fitting my long range tank I had to remove the plastic guard from in the back wheel arch to allow access to the fuel filler/breather lines. I noticed that there is a plastic grommet in the back of the cab that would be ideal for running cables through. No doubt this could be located on the inside of the cab once the lining was shifted or removed.
Wish I had found it before struggling to run cabling through the floor with other factory installed cables!

Lastchance57 thanks.
Next time I go through town I'll call into the Mitsi dealer and take some pix of a MQ cab chassis on the lot

Just a quick update after I reacquainted myself with what's actually there. The grommet would be in the tub front, but, there is a rubber plug/ grommet at low level on the cab. It appears to have the cable for the fuel flap release and possibly some other cable. This may be adequate for the proposed purpose. I'm not sure if this is accessible from inside the cab though.
I reckon best bet is to do as you have suggested above and take a few reference photos.
Sure beats relying on memory, especially if it's mine!

I've run power cables and audio cables for my sub behind the rear seats using the door floor trims, there's a channel that runs down there on both side from front to back, routed the cables up through the trim panel of the rear seats.

In the front near the passenger fuses there is a grommet with a cable loom going through it, you can poke cable in there and pull it through from under wheel well then back into the bonnet next to the battery.

You do have to remove the fender flaring and the wheel well covers to do this.

Thanks for your replies, however I am trying to avoid running HF/VHF and UHF coaxial cables runs near existing cable runs and looms. I removed the rear passenger side panel which has vent slots for inspection.
With a tub fitted on the back the vent entry point idea looks awkward.
So there it is, a 20mm? grommet carrying just the fuel door release cable.
This grommet looks capable of enclosing 2 coax cables and a 16mm? battery + cable.
Other wise I will go with my original plan, a 25mm hole punch through the floor pan behind the rear seat.

Drill/Hole saw and silicone by the looks.

Similar install planned.

Where are you intending to remote the head units?
For safety reasons while mobile I am not happy with the head units down low so the only place I can see is centred atop the dash.

Not sure yet Giovanni.

The UHF CB screen is in the Microphone, so no problem there.

The 857 remote head will be down low unless I can think of a way of keeping the heat off it high up, which is nigh on impossible, so it'll probably be low.

Still thinking about it. May take me weeks to decide. I like to take my time.

After fighting depression and anxiety for the last 12 months, I have finally finished my 857/UHF CB install. Basically, both units are behind the back seat. Wiring (8 AWG Red/Black - It will feed a second battery in the tub and a battery in the camper trailer as well eventually, all via a battery isolator) and 3 x RG-58 heavily shielded antenna cables go from the engine bay to the rear sitting on top of the LH chassis rail. The power cable is in its own 13mm conduit and the 3 RG-58s are in their own 10mm conduit. The 2 conduits come up through the floor behind the rear seat through special grommets I designed and 3D printed, sealed on both sides with silicone where they come through the floor to keep the rust out. The radio units are attached to the brackets already there on the LHS. Came out really well. Pictures. If anyone wants the STL files, let me know. Printed in ESum ABS+ for heat resistance. :-)

Yaesu ATAS-120A for HF and a Comet SB-2/SB-5 (clone maybe) VHF/UHF antenna :-)

CB is a Uniden UH7760 NB :-)
