I thought by saying this you were saying you'd added a secondary filter and that was the problem.

Are you suggesting that Mitsubishi now supplies a finer filter than they did previously? First I've heard of that if that's the case. An interesting development. Would you have a part number for the finer one?

MMA released an update fuel filter a little while ago, possibly end of last year (?), i don't know the specs on it but part number is 177OA177

Well now that is interesting. Funny how they seem to have quietly slipped that out. Perhaps they thought those with finer secondary filters were onto a good thing?

Dunno? But my surge came back this morning :(
Gonna take the secondary filter out and see how it goes.

I haven't had my cold engine surges for ages now (touch wood). No idea why in that I never knew the cause so the various remedies I tried may or may not have worked. My secondary filter came well after the surges disappeared but hasn't caused any issues as yet.

Well, after getting upset, then angry, i got the spanners out after work and started with obvious things...hitting everything with a hammer. Jokes :)
I removed the secondary (pre) filter to eliminate a suction possibility and narrow a clogged filter (already? Doubtful) to one or the other.
While the second filter was removed, i could reach the back of the fuel rail, so removed the Chip harness and re-plugged the standard plugs in, and did the same with the maf plug. Figured that while i haven't run the chip since surging started, i would eliminate the possibility of something in the harness playing up too.
Trip home was divine, smooth, quiet, smoke free. Infact, it was sooo good, i turned around and did another lap of the freeway and suburbs to check i wasn't dreaming!
So, is it fixed? Dunno, but will give it a few days running as is before refitting the secondary filter, monitor how that works for a few more days, then maybe next weekend clean up all the plugs in the chip harness and have another crack at that.
Will keep updating how it goes so others have a finer point of reference for this very annoying (and time consuming, expensive and inconvenient) little fault.

The problem you have now (which is not as bad as the problem you had before) is that having done more than one thing you won't really know which one fixed it. Same as me to some extent. The maf plug has been a known culprit before so make sure the connection is a good fit and whack in some contact cleaner and maybe some grease or other lubricant between the connectors to ensure you preserve a decent connection. The chip harness could be a real possibility too. From memory there are a few different connections in the loom? Might be worth contacting Tony to see if he has any new looms lying around that he can sell you? Or you might be able to send it to him for testing? I guess that depends on whether you sourced what you have from him or somewhere else.

Still it is encouraging that you seem to have fixed it for the time being. I can imagine the mix of relief and satisfaction that came from thinking you've finally beaten it.

Haha, I haven't beaten it, I just haven't let it beat me lol.
Yeah, I know doing more than one item at a time was a bad idea, altho I expected it not to work out if I'm honest. Secretly I thonk it was the fuel rail plug, was a bit dirty at the back of the rail, and the maf plug was also quite dusty. Will hit it all with contact cleaner before reassembly and check pin conditions. Quite excited to be having progress!
Cheers for the advice and feedback :-)

CD this uprated filter was introduced as their first line of argument againt the surging issue one tning I noticed when I pulled it from the box is that it is smaller (substantially) and is apparently a finer micron rating although what rating it is is unknown to me, I am convinced it lacks power with this filter I am going to fit either a ryco or cooper next time around, I say it lacks power as I believe by obtaining fuel from a suction point rather than pressure it struggles to suck it through this new filter, but I may be wrong on my assumption ideas any one

Just got mine back from the dealer....valves adjusted , apparently all my inlet valves had to be backed off, $643, checked my manifold for carbon all good, flashed me some new software for ECU. Runs smooth as silk now but still puffing smoke, especially when cold apparently the injectors are flogged and this is only the second case seen in as many years.
Any way four new injectors on Mitsu warranty @ $865 each!!!...coming my way once he runs it past the Mitsu overlords, over $4000 inparts and labour....mate wot a spew if it still smokes.
Hey anyway Im well please with the effort these guys have put in at AlbanyWorld of cars formerly Northside Mitsubishi at least I am not getting the run around

Ok, refitted the second fuel filter (pre filter), done around 300km's today, roughly 1/3 each of hwy, country back roads and suburban 50-60km/hr stuff, no surging, spluttering or anything at all.

Looks like we found a winner......

Poor connection of fuel rail plug and MAP sensor plug.

Something else to add to the list of surging problem fault finding :)

MAP or MAF? Maf already on list.

MAP, hard to say whether it was the MAP or fuel rail plug, but those two plugs are relatively easy to check on a cool engine (map is real easy lol) so for a 2 minute check i coulda avoided 2 weeks of looking

My GLX boggs down when i change into third gear. It doesn't seem to matter what RPM i change at but only does it into third. Has anyone else had this problem?
The car only has 800kms on the clock so i am putting it down to being new and tight for the moment.

Don't have any surging issues in other gears or when using cruise control like some have mentioned either.

My GLR only surges when using cruise control, fine when I turn off cruise control. Mitsubishi mechanic admins there is a problem but can't fix. Has anyone got any ideas?

There was supposed to be an ECU reflash which was directed to fix the cruise control surging issue. Do you know if your vehicle has had that reflash yet?

l had the same problem, they discovered they (stealers) had flashed with the wrong code, once corrected all went smooth. This may not be your problem but something to query.

Also, if you haven't already, do the following before it gets any worse...
Replace fuel filter
Clean MAF sensor with maf sensor cleaner spray and check air cleaner
Check "prongs" on maf sensor plug
Check map and fuel rail plugs, give them a clean while you have them unplugged with a good electrical cleaner.

Then look at adding a fuel additive/lubricant (Mitsu do their own one aswell) if no success.

Then it's to the dealer for a SQL (injector relearn)

Then it's time to replace the SCV (suction control valve)

All the surging starts like this, get on top of it before it drives you MAD

Still happens stinger but the symptoms have been narrowed down now so most of the time an easy fix compared to years ago.

Yeah its ongoing, but with the hilux, d40 and dmax all sharing common parts for fuel system, it aint just a triton thing. Of note is most of the surging can be linked to fuel filters and sensor cleaning, with regular maintence (no, recommended intervals are not regular, especially for fuel filters) these issues do not occur. Took me a while to narrow down some of the causes along with sound advice from others on here and I now have smoothe trouble free cruising :-)

I have a 2009 MN, had the same surging problem, under low load at any speed. Changed scv myself, seems to have fixed it. Got one from Bursons $205 fitted myself, surprisingly easy. So for those that are out of warranty, it is on the back of the injector pump. (I have dual batteries) so had to take them out then two easy accessible Allen key bolts, standard key, out it came. Threw no engine codes and drives like a dream. Also Bursons list it as a fuel regulator valve.
